Wow that guy is off to a sick start. 6-0, 2.17 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, .214 BAA, 66 SO, 7 BB, in 58 innings of work. Guess he was worth the money so far.

Still a BS rule. They should go into the draft like everyone else..teams like Houston, TB, Pittsburgh etc. never had a chance. Fucking Yankees..

Only American, Canadian, and Puerto Rican's get drafted though.

Other Latin players are just signed. Same with Korean and Japanese players. Except some Japanese players require a 'posting fee' paid to their Japanese club before they can play here, as was the case with Tanaka, Ichiro, Dice-K and Darvish.

But consider Tanaka's posting fee was capped at $20MM, far more affordable than the $51.1MM for Dice-K and the $51.7MM for Darvish.

Players are still more likely to pick the Yankees/Red Sox/etc because they know the contract will be more. Lowering the fee only helped the Yankees/Red Sox/etc pay less up front. It did nothing.

It's not the 20m it's the contract afterwards. Which is why there were only a handful of teams making an offer..people think oh 20m it opens up to everyone, no it doesn't.

I was mostly referring to you saying they should be in the draft. Another thing on that point to consider is these guys are not amateurs like kids out of HS and collage are, so they are going to command a bit more money then even a 1st round draft pick might initially.

I'm glad we have stayed away from it myself. The Red Sox probably never got $51.1 million of value from DiceK before he became garbage.

The problem I have with it I guess is that it's not open to all..like getting other internationals.

It is. Those other teams choose not to spend. It might be a wise choice on their part, but it's not out of reach for any team, only what they are willing to pay. And in that respect it's no different than free agency.

You mentioned Houston, but that's actually a bit of a hot topic right now because Houston is purposely not spending money in order to lose and stock up on draft picks.

Several teams owners have complained that the AL West teams are going to get to pad their overall record by playing a team that's not trying to win, 18 times.

But many teams can't afford it. Is not that they choose not to but just can't do it. Look at the Rays, they win by drafting and have good players on the cheap for a few years..

Whether be by choice or not there will only be a few after the Japanese, always. Detroit, yeah they had a choice .. Dodgers sure. But the Rays not a chance. Imo, that's unfair.

It's not unfair...the Rays choose to be cheap.

This.

Look at the Twins. They have always kept a low payroll/operating expense and even offered to sell the team into contraction, yet their owner is considerably more wealthy than Illitch.

A 1 time $20 million bid (if it goes that high) is not out of the reach for any MLB ballclub. Salary is negotiated after winning the bid.

Sorry but I find it pretty fair.

It's not about how much the owner has..disagree fine but certain teams wont go big. Call that a choice..in the end teams couldn't go after him. It wasn't that long ago, Pittsburgh didn't even have a TV deal..
