Tigers and MLB 2019-2020 Free Agents Rule 5 Offseason Calendar Winter Meetings

It's hard to imagine each is worth 6.1m but they're 1-year deals so it's better than I expected. What's the home run difference from Minny to Detroit. Nonetheless hope for the best.

I dont love the walk rates, but this team needed some pop and they both have 25-30 hr bats so I guess we got a little better. Both still in what youd consider peak ages so a 1 year deal could land a potential prospect if one of them has a plus season.

Neither have very decent OBP being .295 and .311, so their relative lack of good plate discipline and no speed means that both will fit right in with their Tigers teammates.

It's the Tigers we're not getting stars. Gotta take what we can get. I'm hopeful they can each hit 20 home runs. Hope, hope, hope.

To clear roster space for the Schoop and Cron signings, 1B Brandon Dixon has been designated for assignment. The 40-man roster is now full.

The Twins claimed Cron from Tampa and paid him $4.8MM last season, but balked at the $7.7MM salary he was projected to earn through arbitration.
Cron ends up getting a raise from the Tigers, though still coming in under his projected arbitration mark.

While Cron and Schoop aren?t superstars, they are exactly the kind of free agent signings that the Tigers figured to be interested in making this offseason. We know the team won?t be ready to contend in 2020, but after winning just
47 games in 2019 they needed to make some additions that will at least make them marginally better.

It?s also possible that the Tigers could flip one or both of these players for prospects at the trade deadline should they have good first halves.
In any case, give credit to the Tigers? front office credit for trying to make the roster more competitive for 2020. It will be interesting to see if any additional moves follow, particularly for the outfield.

Why the Detroit Tigers' latest signings are just what the lineup needed: Plenty of power.

In Cron and Schoop, the Tigers think they know a bit about what they?re getting. Both players are basically known commodities ? though Schoop, a 2017 All-Star, still has some potential ? and fill the Tigers' big needs at the plate and by position.

They came with higher price tags than last year's free-agent additions, but the Tigers are still fishing the shallow end of the free-agent pool. Last offseason's marquee signings ? second baseman Josh Harrison and shortstop Jordy Mercer ? also came with a promise of consistent performance. Instead, the duo spent most of 2019 injured.

Still, true to general manager Al Avila?s word at this year?s winter meetings, the Tigers have spent more money than in winters past:
The signings of Cron, Schoop and catcher Austin Romine came with a $16.3 million price tag this winter.
Harrison, Mercer, right-handed pitcher Tyson Ross and lefty Matt Moore totaled $15.75 million last winter.

The Tigers likely aren't done spending either, with possible bargains on pitching upgrades looming during the holiday season.

We can?t wait to get your thoughts on the following topic:

What are your thoughts on the signings of Jonathan Schoop and C.J. Cron?

Me: Finally a step in the right direction for on field product.

White Sox looking to seriously contend next season, also signing LH Gio Gonzalez. Tigers of course, are just trying to inch closer to fielding a competitive team.

Since the current "FULL" rebuild did not begin until the Tigers traded JD, JUp, and JV in July & August 2017 .. I think the Tigers are doing a very good job of rebuilding the team.

No, I am not suggesting that Schoop and/or Cron will be with the team for more than the one year 2020 .. but I am suggesting that the Tigers could realistically win 65+ in 2020 without having to trade away any of their many young prospects. And, in fact, ..there is good reason to expect that Tiger fans will finally begin to see some of their many young prospects make significant progress in the higher minor leagues ..as well as a few of them making the leap to the MLB Detroit Tiger roster.

I think the next 2 seasons (2020 and 2021) are going to be a very exciting time to be an optimistic Detroit Tiger fan.
