Tigers asked about Chase Headley

my guess is that its still not likely that we get him, but id love it if we did.

I don't get where Dombrowski says that other than maybe a vet 5th starter he's basically done w/off season moves? I would think you would keep feeling every team out and find a guy like Headley, make an offer....What can u lose? I know DD never tips his hand but I don't recall him ever saying he's pretty much got his team together.

It's such a game of poker. Maybe he is saying that to get another GM to ask about a Tigers player(s), or to offer something up from that team.
I think the majority feeling here is we hope he isn't done.

The article said that SD would want a lot for him becuase very few 3B options are available. I don't know what "a lot" is but he isn't anything special. There will be better options closer to the trade deadline that won't cost as much.

like who? headley is one of the best young third basemen in the game, hes just really underrated because he playes in an offensive wasteland in san diego; for his career his OPS at home is only .655, but his road OPS is .805. he also walks a good deal, is decent to good in the field, and isnt a liability on the basepaths. basically, hes everything we dont have at third right now for cheaper and a lot younger. id give up at least turner or castellanos for him (but not both).

I wouldn't even consider giving up Turner for Headly. 3B with no pop.

did you even bother to read my post, or what? .441 road slugging, .805 road ops for his career? do those mean anything to you? his stats look deflated because he plays in SD. he could/would probably hit 15-20 homers here b/c he did it in the minors for SD. he also hits lots of doubles. a 3B with no power would be Inge's .665 career road OPS or Kelly's career .667 road OPS (long-term road stats are more useful for comparison because it tends to be much more park neutral).

Copa isn't a band box. He had 4 HR last year. Moving to Copa he is going to hit 15-20 with a flick of the wrist?

So we have to wait until July, lol.

I'm fine with that. There is no doubt in my mind that the Tigers as they sit are fully capable of winning the division. Why give up the farm now during a seller's market?

he might not hit 20, but he has hit 9, 11, and 12 in SD in different years, so 15 or more in copa is a reasonable expectation. the 4 this past year is an anomaly compared to his previous seasons.

and really, who cares? it will be more than we got from 3B this year, plus he would provide better defense and a LOT more OBP. and he's younger, and he's cheaper, etc etc etc. not to mention the fact that we already have ~20HR power from two spots in the lineup that a lot of teams dont (SS and C, especially C), so having 12-18ish homers from 3B would be just fine. home runs arent the end-all be-all.

edit: and trades are usually more expensive in July because the buyers are more desperate to fill holes for playoff runs and the sellers can ask for more and get away with it, so we SHOULDNT wait until July if we can fill our holes now.

Yea, but it's still odd that he commented that way. He seems to always imply that he's willing to keep his options open. I find it very hard to believe that he's got a team in a position to make a strong run next year, and a couple moves to upgrade at corner OF or 2nd base, will improve their chances and he's not buying. Not bagging on DD, happen to think he's a very good GM. Maybe he's just changing his tact w/the press!

Tigers can ill afford to offer up many if any players on their roster and/or in the high minors who have any real value in trades, they are thin everywhere except in RPs, and they are apparently bumped up against max-payroll now, w/o losing likely tens of millions yet again next season if they were to acquire, say for examples OFers Carlos Beltran and/or Cespedes, who are or will be FAs. Sure, it would give them more leeway in trading away one or more of Kelly, Raburn, Boesch, Jackson, and/or Young, but those PT/FT OFers aren't making anything even remotely comparable in salary to what they would be adding with one or especially both. They still would have Inge/Kelly for 3B and Raburn/Santiago/Worth? for 2B as well.

Still really don't understand WHY the Tigers didn't make an offer to the Jays FA LH- batting 2B Kelly Johnson, who is going to accept arby. Tigers' brass can't possibly think/believe that what they likely will have in" musical chairs" @ that position is equal to or better than him combined? At the beginning of last season they still had Sizemore vying for that position, and now they obviously do not. Strength in numbers? Leyland would become upset by losing Raburn or Worth as an option there as a possible result? WTF?

It will be cheaper because there aren't any options now. At the deadline there will be many more options...there always are. I do agree that he is an upgrade.....but not if it means giving up a Turner type player.

Illitch isn't hurting. If he was, that 5$ pizza would be 6 bucks.

I have full trust in DD after the Fister and Cabrera trades. Go get him DD, Castellanos is just a prospect and Headley is a sure thing so why not

If the main piece of the deal for Headley was Castellanos, I would do that deal in a second. I've watched Castellanos play a couple times, and he can definitely rake, but he is just so big, and like most people think, he will probably be moving to a corner outfield spot. Who knows what all the Padres are wanting though.

Turner is gonna be a star....I would not trade him or Castellanos for Headly. You guys have flipped yous lids
