Tigers pitchers, including Justin Verlander, accused of doctoring baseballs 'for years'

Sun, January 10, 2021, 11:40 AM MST
Former Tigers ace Justin Verlander is among several major-league pitchers who have been accused of using a grip concoction engineered and widely distributed by a fired Los Angeles Angels staffer. Several Tigers pitchers allegedly began inquiring about the so-called "sticky stuff" as far back as 2005, after being told about it by new Tiger and longtime Angels closer Troy Percival, according to filings in California state court Thursday.

come on, it's baseball. Cheating is fine as long as you don't get caught.

Also true cheating after the fact HOF players will get questioned. I don't know what part is true or not But JV is scum after all these years of "Steroids is wrong, cheating is wrong etc.."

I wouldn't go as far as scum...but he is definitely a hypocrite. I also look at his dominance a little differently. Just like I do with Barry Bonds and the hitters in the steroid era.

The reason I'm mad about Bonds was he was such a great hitter when he played for Pittsburgh. He didn't need to cheat. he was already on his way to the hall of fame. Can't you just fade away naturally. And the thing about players in the steroid era even if it was 80% like Canseco wrote about it wasn't 100%. So someone was getting screwed.

And Hypocrite is a better word.

I don't think Bonds did it because he didn't want to fade away naturally. From what I remember being reported about it, he was pissed that McGuire and Sosa were getting all of the attention with the HR chase. He knew they were doing roids and he knew he was better than both of them.

And that's they he isn't in the hall. The choices we make dictate the life we lead.

yup

however, I think he should be in the hall. There are already cheaters in, why not let him in too?

Probably one day. Though I'm not sure how I feel about that. MLB screwed it up. What should have happened is when they saw all these players using steroids they should have just said "No rules against it so we forget but from now on you use and get caught you'll get suspended."

Though I would have like an apology. They go along way. Like Rose if he would have just said "sorry" I think he would have been in.

Well...equipment violations get an 8 day suspension...about 5% of the season.

Steroids is a 50 game suspension...a quarter to a third of the season.

That?s why equivalently, Brady should have only been suspended the first half of the first game that year.

It's actually a 80-game (since 2014) suspension first time. 162 for 2nd and life for third.

As an example. Robinson Cano has received both a 80-game and now a 162-game suspension.

current/ex-Tigers suspended for PEDs (not necessarily with Tigers at time of suspension)

Francisco Cruceta (50 games)
Lino Urdaneta (50 games)
Victor Alc?ntara (80 games)
Jair Jurrjens (80 games)
Alex Sanchez (10 days)
Cameron Maybin (25 games)
Jhonny Peralta (50 games)
Neifi Perez (25 games and 80 games)
Juan Rincon (10 days)
Daniel Stumpf (80 games)
Jacoby Jones (50 games)

If hitters can use pine tar, why can’t pitchers use something to enhance their grip on that is sanctioned by MLB?

NFL had outlawed stick'em. But now, almost all receivers where specialized gloves. Technology has often driven sport change. Look of the development of the baseball gloves over time.

Stick’em was outlawed because of the way the Raiders abused it.

As for advanced technology, hockey sticks, too. As a kid I used veritable 2 x 4s. Now they are made of polymer-resin-fiber.

And golf clubs are a long way from a hickory-shafted mashie.
