Tigers Hot Stove 2012

Payroll is going to be huge under my scenario.

Not necessarily. I'd suspect Valverde and his $9mil salary is gone. I'd think we could roll with Benoit, Dotel, and Villareal. That offsets the raises to JV and Miggy. DY and his $6.75mil salary are gone. Raburn and his $2.1mil salary are gone. There are lots of arbitration eligible guys due raises, but I'd suspect that nearly $9mil from those two clowns could cover lots of that.

True but God forbid Raburn hits .230 the rest of the way, he might just get a 5 year extension. Who would close for us? I keep hearing Benoit doesn't like to close.

Dotel has closed before. I think Villareal could be a nice closer too. There's probably also some cheaper alternatives we could find via FA or trade. Then again, Valverde could come back a lot cheaper too.

Not positive but Dotel is older I think and I thought he was a shitty closer. (I know I sound about as sure of myself as ever) lol

The only reason I mentioned him is that I believe he's signed next year. Same with Benoit. Valverde isn't.

Daddy Al says there's a good chance we're done trading, but if anything else were to happen it'd be for a right handed bat. Hanley anyone?

6:47pm: With Ramirez owed roughly $38.5MM for the remainder of his contract, rival executives say the Marlins would have to pick up a substantial portion of that money in any deal, reports Buster Olney of ESPN.com. As well, some teams think Ramirez is not a third baseman, though they might try him again at shortstop (Twitter links).

3:59pm: Though the Marlins are waiting for the Dodgers to show interest in Ramirez, no significant talks have taken place between the teams yet, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports (on Twitter).

2:15pm: The Athletics, Dodgers, Blue Jays and Orioles are among the teams with interest in Hanley Ramirez, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports (on Twitter). Interest levels in Ramirez vary and nothing is close, Rosenthal reports. The Red Sox are also interested, according to USA Today. However, Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com hears Boston isn't in on Ramirez (Twitter link).

An American League official told Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald that the Marlins' asking price for Hanley Ramirez is "not ridiculous." Miami wants quality young pieces in return for Ramirez, who earns $15MM in 2012, $15.5MM in 2013 and $16MM in 2014. The infielder does not have no-trade protection.

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com suggests the A's, Dodgers, Red Sox, Giants, Pirates, Blue Jays and Orioles are potential fits for Ramirez. Earlier today, Dave Cameron of FanGraphs suggested Toronto could be a fit because Rogers Centre is a haven for right-handed power hitters. Though I have no doubt the Blue Jays checked in on Ramirez, they routinely inquire in available players, so this isn't necessarily an indication of serious interest.

What about Al Alburquerque as a closer next year? He just started his rehab at Lakeland.

Pretty big leap for Al Al, who never pitched more then 1/3 of a season above AA.

I'd say they ask Benoit or Villarreal, or even look at FA closers.

apparently Hanley Ramirez is going to the Dodgers.

Yeah, heard that on my drive in today. They got him for peanuts too.

From MLBTR:
The Dodgers have acquired Hanley Ramirez and Randy Choate from the Marlins for Nathan Eovaldi and a minor leaguer, reports Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports (on Twitter). The minor leaguer is right-hander Scott McGough according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports, and Dylan Hernandez of The Los Angeles Times says that Miami is not sending any money to the Dodgers (Twitter links).

"We had to do something," Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria said, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter). "The machine was sputtering. It's too good a baseball team and for some reason it didn't seem to be operating on all cylinders from the beginning of the season."

Al Al would drive me nuts as a closer..walk machine.

Btw Hamels inked a deal with Philly to become the 2nd highest paid pitcher ever. Extension for 6 years and worth over 140 million.

And now you see why it would have been dumb to trade Castellanos for him.

Castellanos has more trade value than Han Ram.

Yeah, I think people on here were willing to do Turner, Castellanos, Brantley and a couple other for Ham.

Looking over some of these pitching contracts just makes me cringe a little when thinking what it is going to cost to resign JV. Could be looking at 6y 150m+

I have to admit, I did not realize exactly how good Hamels has been until now. I knew he was good, but wow.
