Left-hander Drew Smyly continues his bid to be named the fifth starter when the Detroit Tigers play the St. Louis Cardinals this afternoon.
Smyly (0-0, 1.13 ERA) will be making his fourth appearance and second start of the spring. He has allowed one run on four hits and three walks in eight innings pitched. Smyly has struck out seven.

I just say earhole any Cardinal batter who swings at pitch one and misses.

not saying anything's imminent, but all Dombro-Leyland confabs at end of dugout (such as the one today) are interesting this time of spring.

only thing i worry about with him is getting jumpy when the ball is hit hard at him. it might take a while for him to shake the nerves.

He doesn't seem like someone that has nervous energy. He just plays and doesn't worry about it..

:ugh:

Why did Furcal have to be in the way of Brandon's ground ball? Rotten, rotten luck!

We need a thread with all Inge's classic sayings. Each day, I can't stand him more and more.

seven up, six down (plus a walk) vs cards for Tigers Drew Smyly - with what Leyland said is StL lineup "that is a real good test".
Smyly with just one baserunner (walk) through two innings. I'd say he's passing at least the first part of this "good test."

Santiago grounds to second,

Jackson walks,

Boesch with a pop single to short,

Peralta line drive single to right scoring Jackson,

Tigers lead 1 - 0,

Kelly grounds to third and runners move up,

Dirks singles in both runners and gets to third on a throw past catcher,

Tigers lead 3 - 0,

Avila grounds to second,

Wainwright had gone 16 1/3 Grapefruit innings without allowing an earned run until that third inning vs. Tigers,

Interesting inning for Smyly, as he 1) walked the Pithcer, 2) stuck his foot out to knock down a single,
3) didn't hold Beltran on allowing SB, but gets out of the jam with just two runs allowed and the Tigers still leading 3 - 2.

Tigers 4th inning,

Clete grounds to first,

Cringe grounds to second, but he squared the ball up and hit it on the screws,

Santiago doubles to left,

Jackson reaches first on a fielding error at short,

Tigers lead 4 - 2,

Boesch pops to second.

Smyly gets two quick fly ball outs, and then hits a batter,
and a pickoff ends the 4th inning,
Tigers lead 4 - 2.

better awareness of the baserunner for Smyly this time, as he holds Jon Jay close, then picks him off to end 4th.
