Though there was some speculation that Andy Dirks would get the start in right field, Jim Leyland has expressed at other points this postseason that he preferred the right-handed bat against most lefties, that he had been starting Dirks out of a lack of other righty bats. Thus, about seven weeks after Garcia got the call to the big leagues, he’ll be starting Game 1 of the World Series.
The other call was Alex Avila behind the plate over Gerald Laird. It’ll be Avila’s first start against a lefty starter since Sept. 1, when he was in the lineup against Francisco Liriano. He went 0-for-3 in that game.
It’s worth noting, though, that Avila has caught all three of Justin Verlander’s starts this postseason. It’s not that Laird can’t catch Verlander, obviously. He’s done it many times this season. But you have to figure this assignment is about not messing with a good thing.

Detroit Tigers lineup: Delmon Young in left field, Avisail Garcia in right; Andy Dirks takes a seat.
Without a designated hitter, Tigers manager Jim Leyland was forced to pick between Andy Dirks and Avisail Garcia as Detroit's starting right fielder in Game 1.
He chose the 21-year-old rookie.
With left-hander Barry Zito slated to start the opener the World Series for the San Francisco Giants, Leyland went with the right-handed hitting Garcia over Dirks, who will move to the bench for the first time this postseason.
With no designated hitter in San Francisco, Delmon Young will start in left field, and will likely remain there for Game 2, too, before moving back to the DH spot when the series moves to Detroit.
Leyland told reporters this past weekend that he was leaning towards Dirks as the Game 1 starter in right field, but that was before the Giants pulled off three elimination-game wins en route to a World Series berth.
Neither Dirks nor Garcia have faced the 34-year-old Zito at the plate. Neither has the left-handed hitting Alex Avila, who gets the start behind the plate over Gerald Laird, who is in the midst of a 1-for-13 slump with four strikeouts this postseason.
It's the first start Avila has received against a left-handed starter since Sept. 1, when he faced Chicago White Sox southpaw Francisco Liriano.
What do you think? Do you like the moves? Should Leyland have stuck with Dirks? What about starting Avila or Laird? Given Zito's left-handed and right-handed splits, does it make more sense to put a right-handed hitter in the lineup over a lefty?
Leyland will be faced with another tough decision Thursday as the Giants have announced Madison Bumgarner will start Game 2. With another left-hander on the mound, will Leyland keep Garcia in right? Or will he go with Dirks?
