For the second straight day, the Detroit Tigers will battle a left-handed starter. And, for the second straight game, Andy Dirks will ride the pine.
Tigers manager Jim Leyland has elected to keep his outfield the same for Game 2 of the World Series, putting Delmon Young in left field and 21-year-old rookie Avisail Garcia in right.
His decision is likely based strictly on tonight's pitching matchup, as he's looking to stack his lineup heavy with right-handed hitters. As a result, Gerald Laird will get the start behind the plate over left-handed hitter Alex Avila.
Laird, who is 1-for-13 this postseason with four strikeouts, has never faced left-hander Madison Bumgarner, but the 23-year-old's splits indicate a large disparity between lefties (.208) and righties (.241) this year.
Avila was in the lineup in Game 1, hitting eighth and making his first start against a southpaw since Sept. 1. The result? He hit a pair of groundouts off left-hander Barry Zito.

Back to the outfield situation. Leyland told reporters Wednesday that his plan has always been to start Garcia in right field against left-handed pitchers. According to the 67-year-old Leyland, it came down to who would start left field: Dirks or Young.
"It's pretty hard to leave the MVP of the American League championship series out of the lineup," he said.

Doug Fister, a native of Merced, Calif. and a self-proclaimed Giants fan as a child, will counter Bumgarner.
Fister has never faced the Giants, but has found success against Marco Scutaro, the only active player with any experience against him. In 11 career at-bats, Scutaro -- who is batting .432 during an 11-game hitting streak -- has been limited to one hit.

Yet Smoky did not PH for him when he was up against Lincecum. If he's so set on the L-R matchups, clearly someone should have PH for him.

I see we're all back to second guessing the coach. I'm not a fan of DY in left to be sure but he's stepped up his bat in the playoffs. Dirks had one good postseason game thus far and Garcia is the better defender. I don't think having dirks in the lineup is the difference between w/l.
