Lots of good injury news for Tigers: Avila back, Benoit OK, Laird available.
Optimism on Jackson, Dirks, Fister. Kelly (fever) only question.

The shorthanded Detroit Tigers are a bit less shorthanded.
Alex Avila will return to the starting lineup Tuesday night in the series opener against the Cleveland Indians.
Avila has missed the past two games due to right hamstring tightness. He will start at catcher and bat sixth in the lineup.
Outfielder Matt Young, called up from Triple-A Toledo on Sunday to replace injured outfielder Andy Dirks, will make his first start for the Tigers. He will bat second and start in left field.
Left-hander Drew Smyly (2-1, 3.46 ERA) will make his first career start against the Indians.
Right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez (5-4, 5.79) will start for the Indians. Jimenez is 3-5 with a 5.96 ERA in eight career starts against the Tigers.
Delmon Young is 9-for-17 (.529) with a home run and four RBIs in his career against Jimenez. Avila is hitting .400 (4-for-10) with a home run and six RBIs, while Miguel Cabrera is hitting .350 (7-for-20) with three RBIs and six walks.

Remember all the talk about Jim Leyland not caring about the guys who get on base so much as the guys who drive them in? Well, he does have some heart for the OBP guys, apparently, because he cited it as a reason for starting Matt Young tonight against the Indians in the second spot in the order.
“What I do like about him, to be honest with you, and this is kind of being a geek with the numbers, and I’m not into that geek stuff with the numbers, but he does have a pretty good on-base percentage down in Toledo,” Jim Leyland said. “So it looks like he might be able to work the pitcher a little bit, maybe take a walk. He’s not an automatic out. He’s going to give you everything he has.”
Young has 46 walks in 51 games with the Mud Hens, which explains how someone batting .259 could have a .431 on-base percentage.
For the record, the last time the Tigers had two players in the lineup named Young, it was June 17, 2003, and Dmitri Young and Ernie Young were both starting.

This intrigues me that their batting young 2nd. Perhaps their finally catching on?

Leyland on Dirks, AJax, Fister: "We’re getting pretty good news on all those guys. I don’t think it’ll be too long."

Leyland on multiple reasons Tigers not winning (1/2): I would say so. It usually starts with the manager, the coaches, the pitchers"...
Leyland (cont.) ".. the catchers, the infielders, the outfielders. We’re all in cahoots together. One — not so happy right now — big family".

Leyland on Matt Young: "I'm not into that geek stuff with the numbers, but he does have a pretty good on-base percentage."

Leyland on M. Young: "So it looks like he may be able to work the pitcher a little bit, take a walk. He’s not an automatic out."

Don Kelly's availability could be based on whether or not he's contagious. Leyland: "I don’t know if he’ll be here or not.
Leyland on Kelly: "Sometimes, that’s one where you concern yourself a little bit, because you don’t want it to spread throughout the club."

I'm turning off the game if Ubaldo has no control and the Tiger hitters are flailing at everything. Not worth the frustration.

Victor Martinez playing catch on field during Tigers batting practice. Has follow-up exam coming up this month to get cleared for workouts.

Austin Jackson took batting practice today. Didn't look like he had to shut himself down. He's now in center shagging fly balls. Good sign.

Hopefully VMart can come back at some point this season, would be nice to have a DH worth a damn.

Not only is Smyly coming out throwing strikes, he's getting them called stikes. Looks good early. Keeps it up and he'll have a good outing.

Smyly carving up the first 2 batters. We need to sweep this series.

Dusts all 3 of them. Nice inning Drew!

Man I love having Berry leading off! Finally have a good leadoff hitter that isn't afraid to run.

Nice to get a run.... How about 5 more in the next few innings!!!!!
