Alex Avila returns to fifth spot in order, Quintin Berry back on bench.
It appears Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland might've found a temporary solution for filling that troublesome fifth spot in the order.
In his last two games, Alex Avila has batted fifth in the lineup -- and that trend will continue tonight as the Tigers open a nine-game homestand with the first of three against the Baltimore Orioles.
Will the 25-year-old be a permanent solution? We'll just have to wait and find out.
So far, Avila hasn't found much success in the spot his last two games, going 1-for-9 with three strikeouts -- but he's been tearing the cover off the ball in August.
Since Aug. 1, Avila has raised his then .241 batting average 19 points in 12 games, adding seven RBIs and four extra-base hits.
With right-hander Tommy Hunter slated to start for Baltimore, Leyland has stacked his lineup heavy with left-handed hitters, including Andy Dirks, who bats second for the sixth time in the past eight games.
After a two-game absence, Brennan Boesch is back in the lineup, batting seventh and starting in right field. As a result, Quintin Berry finds himself back on the bench.
Delmon Young is batting sixth as the designated hitter and Jhonny Peralta -- not the switch-hitting Ramon Santiago -- will start at shortstop and hit eighth.
Justin Verlander will start for the Tigers, who enter this series 2 1/2 games behind the AL Central-leading Chicago White Sox and one game behind Baltimore and Tampa Bay for the two wild-card spots.
He's 7-0 with a 2.71 ERA in 10 starts against the Orioles, who remain the only team in the American League that he remains undefeated.

Looks like Alex Avila has the No. 5 spot down pat -- for now.
The catcher will hit in front of Delmon Young and Brennan Boesch tonight as Justin Verlander and the Tigers open a 3-game weekend set with the Orioles.
Avila is hitting .375 in the month of August with a .468 on-base percentage.
Andy Dirks, hitting second and playing left field, hasn't slowed down since being out two months with an Achilles injury. He's hitting .366 in August as well with a .998 OPS.
Verlander (12-7) takes the mound, hoping to replicate the success he had the last time he played Baltimore. He threw eight shutout innings July 15 for a 4-0 win at Camden Yards.
He's also pitching much better at home this season (6-2, 1.51 ERA in 10 starts).
The Orioles send right-hander Tommy Hunter to the mound. He's 4-7 with a 5.54 ERA this season, a far cry from his 2010 season with the Rangers, where he posted a 13-4 record and a 3.73 ERA.
Right-handers are hitting .321 off Hunter this season. Left-handers aren't much worse (.291).

Leyland said Villarreal should be good to go Friday nite, after a couple of days off.
Villarreal said he felt fine after a bullpen today. Good for tonite, if needed. Thinks elbow was just a matter of overuse.

I hope they don't need to use him. I have a feeling that JV is going to deal tonight. 8IP, 9K, 1ER

any lineup without Raburn,Inge, and Kelly is OK in my book. this looks like the lineup Smoker will use against righties and flip flop Infante and Dirks against lefties.

Get us in boys.... Se you later... Uncle I. Is off to play edh. Not a great EDH card but i like it any ways...lol. Maybe standard first tonight....

Miguel Cabrera was very candid today about why he doesn't like talking about his own accomplishments. Hear from him on Tigers Live at 6:30.

I'd really like to see Peralta slide in between Young and Boesch.

I don't like those two hitting back to back.

or so high up. part of me wonders if leyland hasnt dropped them to 8 and 9 so that he doesnt piss them off (even though i really wish he would).

I'd rather them back to back.

Have all your best hitters hit in order, don't split them up with trash.

Tonight's Tigers game ball delivery by Spc. David Mix of Hazel Park. Just returned from first tour w/ U.S. Army in Afghanistan.

Orioles announcer. "Markakis with a leadoff RBI double for the Orioles."

How exactly does that work? Good grief.

very close play maybe the Tigers got a break for a change,

thanks ump

Damn Miggy!!! #31!!

28th HR given up by Hunter. 2.17 per game....worst in the AL.
