Doug Fister on mound against Baltimore Orioles as Tigers return to action.
The Detroit Tigers are saving ace Justin Verlander for Sunday to allow him to pitch against both the Chicago White Sox and the Cleveland Indians later this month.
That means Doug Fister (2-6, 4.75 ERA) will start for the Tigers tonight against the Baltimore Orioles as both teams resume play following the All-Star break.
Fister is 2-1 with a 4.68 ERA in four career starts against the Orioles, but he has struggled recently for the Tigers. Fister has allowed a combined 18 earned runs in 14 1/3 innings in his past three starts and has seen his ERA climb from 2.72 to 4.75 in the process.
Current members of the Orioles are hitting a combined .314 (27-for-86) against Fister. Nick Markakis is hitting .429 (6-for-14) with a home run and six RBIs against him.
Right-hander Jason Hammel (8-5, 3.47 ERA) will start for the Orioles. Jhonny Peralta is hitting .417 (5-for-12) with a home run in his career against Hammel.

Doesn't look good on paper, some of these Baltimore bats have some pretty good numbers against fister, plus he's been struggling so this could be ugly. Hope the offense shows up and scores a bunch.

Fielder line drive single to right, hit so hard Jackson has to stop at third,

Young has been taking first pitch pitches, and most all are strike calls, now he chases a slider low, chases an eye level fastball,

Boesch lays off the high fastball, takes a low fastball and lines it to right for a 2 run single,

Tigers lead 2 - 0,

Peralta takes a curve strike, fastball inside, again, 2 seam fly to deep right warning track power for Jhonny,

hammel with 22 pitches,

Tigers lead 2 - 0.
