If Marte started the inning he would have faced different batters in a different mood, because they would not have been ahead and feeling confident.

Leyland would have been last, but he was double stupid, not pulling Crosby after the second and then letting Valverde carry the gas can to the mound.

Because I find it amusing how some people want to blame Leyland for things that are obviously the fault of the players not performing in their expected roles.

It's also amusing to see them eat crow after screaming that Marte should have been in.

hindsight is 20-20. valverde has a history of pitching like shit in tie games and marte hasnt had a blowup for us before. common sense would be to use him instead of valverde. now valverde is not going to be available given that he pitched yesterday and threw around 30 pitches tonight just in case we need a closer tomorrow.


really, the whole bullpen was mismanaged tonight. below is supposed to be our long reliever but he pitched only 1 2/3 innings on only 24 pitches. id like to know why he was pulled so early when our starter didnt make it out of the 4th. its not like he was really being hit or anything. what good is a long reliever that isnt used for spot starts (which i also argue he should have done tonight because crosby is fucking garbage and everyone but DD and leyland know it) and doesnt pitch for long? pitchers need to pitch better but they also need to be put in the situations where they can succeed best. neither of those things happened tonight.

Good point. Completely different situations and relaxed hitters with a four run lead vs. pressured in a tie game.

JV in tie games .273/.355/.391/.746 Opponents are hitting him pretty good... In 238 at bats...35 runs 65 hits... Yikes Jim could have those numbers at his disposal if he would just get someone to print them out for him..

and pulling below too early, and not pulling valverde early enough when it was clear he had nothing tonight, etc. every facet of our game tonight was pathetic, but the pitching and managing especially so.

By the way, Marte has an ERA of 4.91 before tonight, worse that Valverde. Yeah, he's been lights out this season.
