Quintin Berry gets starting nod; Brennan Boesch sits for second straight day.
Alert the authorities -- it's official: Quintin Berry is still alive.
After starting on the bench the past five games, Berry will bat ninth and start in left field as the Detroit Tigers seek a second straight win and a series victory over the Twins in Minnesota.
It's only Berry's fourth start in the 12 games since outfielder Andy Dirks has returned from the disabled list and his second start since Aug. 5.
Carrying a hot bat, Dirks is back in the lineup after his 2-for-3 performance Tuesday night that saw him hit a tiebreaking homer in the sixth and welcome two intentional walks.
Dirks will start in right field and bat second -- a spot typically reserved for Berry with a right-handed pitcher on the mound. It'll be the 27th time this season Dirks has batted second.
With Dirks and Berry manning the outfield, Brennan Boesch will take a seat for the second straight game with Delmon Young being tabbed the designated hitter for the sixth consecutive game. The move makes sense with a right-hander slated to start for Minnesota.
Alex Avila will make his third start in the No. 5 spot -- and second in three days -- as manager Jim Leyland continues to experiment with his order. On Tuesday, Jhonny Peralta batted fifth and responded with a two-run single in the first inning.
Max Scherzer takes the mound for the Tigers, who are looking to trim their two-game deficit after the AL Central-leading White Sox won Tuesday night.
Scherzer will start opposite Twins right-hander Cole De Vries, who is coming off the worst start of his brief career when he allowed eight runs over 1 1/3 innings of a 12-6 loss Friday.
