Doug Fister is back. But is he 100 percent healthy?
That should be answered Friday night when the 28-year-old right-hander makes his first start since suffering a right adductor strain on Aug. 19.
And, he'll make his return in arguably one of the biggest games this season for the Tigers, who trail Chicago by three games in the AL Central.
Tigers manager Jim Leyland didn't mince words when asked Friday afternoon about the importance of this weekend's three-game series.
"We still have a ways to go, but obviously this is an important series -- without question," Leyland said.
Fister is 0-2 with a 3.51 ERA in four starts against the White Sox, but this will be the first time the right-hander will face the club as a member of the Tigers.
He'll start opposite right-hander Jake Peavy, who is winless in his last four starts and is 1-1 with a 5.06 ERA in his last four starts against the Tigers.
After a scheduled day off, Alex Avila is back behind the plate, hitting seventh for the Tigers behind right fielder Brennan Boesch. Boesch and Dirks, who is batting second, will start in the outfield corners with left-handed hitter Quintin Berry available off the bench.
The Tigers might be working a shorthanded bench Friday night after the club designated outfielder Jeff Baker for assignment earlier in the day. Avisail Garcia called up early Friday and -- at last count -- was traveling to Detroit, but it's unclear whether he'll be ready in time for tonight's game.
