Tigers Hitters vs. hughes. Cabrera 9 for 20 2 doubles, 4 homeruns, Victor 6 for 15, Jhonny 7 for 18.
Yankees are starting Phil Hughes today, in case you hadn’t heard. As you can see from a lot of the splits below, that’s not the greatest of matchups for the Tigers. Ramon Santiago, 0-for-7 off Hughes), gets his first start of the year in place Omar Infante, 0-for-4 off Hughes.
Today will be the first of back-to-back starts for Santiago, whom Jim Leyland plans to play at shortstop tomorrow in place of Jhonny Peralta, given Peralta’s struggles against CC Sabathia. Leyland’s remarks when asked about Santiago and any progress this year following winter ball would suggest he’s trying to get a spark.
“I haven’t really seen the effects of that so far,” Leyland said of Santiago, who went 6-for-24 with four walks, a home run and eight RBIs in an injury-shortened Spring Training. “That’s why he’s playing the next couple games, to see what he’s got. He’s a big part of our team and has been in the past, did not have a good year last year, started out OK in winter ball but did not finish real good. So we’ll have to just see how that plays out.”
