Tigers vs. yankees Game Preview.

Phil Hughes is right-handed, but his splits fit the definition of a “reverse right-hander.” You can throw left-handed hitters against him if you want, but they’re batting just .203 against him this year with more strikeouts (61) than hits (57). By contrast, right-handed batters are .326 with a .977 OPS against him. Thus, Delmon Young is in the lineup and Omar Infante is batting second. No Jeff Baker in the lineup, though. No Quintin Berry, either.
Worth noting, though, that lefties hit .312 off Hughes last year, compared to .234 for righties.

Rick Porcello and red-hot Detroit Tigers seek sixth straight win, 10th consecutive win at home.
Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland will typically bat second baseman Omar Infante ninth in the lineup when a right-handed starter is expected to take the mound.
Not tonight.
Infante is batting second Tuesday night as the Tigers continue their four-game series against the visiting New York Yankees.
The reason? It's simple. Left-handed batters are hitting just .203 off New York Yankees right-hander Phil Hughes. Right-handers are batting .326.
As a result, Infante moves up from the ninth spot to No. 2 -- a spot he typically fills when a left-hander is slated to pitch.
Quintin Berry had recently filled the No. 2 spot against right-handers, but Berry will take a seat on the bench Tuesday as Andy Dirks will start in left for the second straight game.
There was question as to whether Miguel Cabrera, who was removed in the ninth inning Monday night, would need to DH again as he continues to nurse a sore ankle. He won't.
Cabrera will start to third base again and, instead, Delmon Young will serve as tonight's DH. Young will bat sixth behind Brennan Boesch, who will start in right.
Rick Porcello takes the mound as the Tigers look to extend their winning streak to six and their home winning streak to 10. Detroit has hit .310 and averaged 6.3 runs while winning 15 of 16 at Comerica Park.

The last time the Tigers faced Phil Hughes, they were dominated. \
Will they have more success this time around?
The Yankees right-hander throw a complete game, giving up one run and striking out eight in a 5-1 win June 3 at Comerica Park. That lone run came off a Prince Fielder home run.
Hughes (11-8, 3.96 ERA) takes the mound again tonight against Tigers right-hander Rick Porcello (8-6, 4.65).
Facing right-handed and left-handed hitters has been night and day for Hughes this season: Right-handers hit .326 off Hughes, while lefties hit .203.
Porcello, again, finds himself trying to get back on track after a couple rough starts: Despite a 7-5 win against the Red Sox in his last outing, he gave up four runs in 5.2 innings Aug. 1. He also gave up five runs in six innings in a loss to the Blue Jays on July 27.
Although he had a no-decision in his lone start against the Yankees this season, Porcello had a strong 6-inning, 1-run outing June 2 (a 4-3 win).

Andy Dirks, who has three hits in seven at-bats since his return from the disabled list, will hit in the nine spot in manager Jim Leyland's lineup Tuesday night as the Tigers play the second game of their series against the Yankees at Comerica Park.
First pitch is 7:05 p.m.
Dirks will start in left field; Quintin Berry is out of the starting lineup for the third consecutive game.
Rick Porcello (8-6, 4.65 ERA), who is 4-1 with two no-decisions in his last four outings, starts for the Tigers. Phil Hughes (11-8, 3.96 ERA) goes for the Yankees.
At his current pace, Porcello's projected record this year will be 12-9. That would give the 23-year-old right-hander double-digits in victories all four years of his MLB career.
The Tigers, who have won five straight, announced Tuesday they had released left-handed pitcher Fu-Te Ni from the Toledo roster.
