It's not happening where I live; not in my Diocese. So don't penalize your own for the malfeasance of another.

How do you know? Anyway, if there were bad priest at your Diocese don't kid yourself thinking they wouldn't payout money to protect them. Priests, bishops, cardinals -- paedophileis rampant.

I know my Diocese. It has gone out of its way to be transparent about sexual abuse. There is a no tolerance policy, for accusations and I have witnessed it in practice. Approximately 4% of all US priests between 1950 and 2002 were plausabaly accused of sexual abuse, the same ratio as the general population, which is highly disturbing to me. That more than 4,000 cases, so I agree with the description "rampant" and that it still applies. One case like this is one too many. I work directly with the youth of my parish and it would be devastating to ever learn that any one of them were such a victim.

There was little to no action taken to address this since 2002, and we are now feeling the effects of the lack of action. I hope and pray that my Church is purged of all its unholy priests and a better, purified Church is the result. In my Diocese, that is already happening, but then, the incidences of sexual abuse over time here was not that prevalent. In the Northeast, it seems that it was a way of operation and practice, and I have my beliefs as to why that happened.

The key is to expose and evict those who are part of the problem or will do nothing to solve it. Many of them became priests to collapse the Church from within and this is the way they acted, with that objective as the final outcome.

I'd ask you to consider that each diocese has its own bishop with his own stamp on his flock. And I can assure you that in Charlotte, NC, or in any parish in western NC, no priest who gets "found out" is protected.

This Monsignor was once the number-2 man in our diocese.

EDIT: As for Pope Francis, I will not dispute your claim, especially as it applies to now laicized former Cardinal McCarrick -- an altogether horrifying chain of circumstances. I am not much of an advocate of this present pope for many other reasons.

I am not interested in helping to reform the Church. I wish it would quietly go away over the next century, and future generations would be taught a moral system based on common sense and societal norms - like don't lie, cheat or steal - instead of a make believe system of punishment or reward in the afterlife. A "social contract" if you will. Was always mildly amusing to me to see Christian Americans mock the "70 Virgins" promised by Muslim extremists, when their own belief system was just as ridiculous.

As far as taking the fight to the Church myself, well... I didn't end up being a litigator, and a career change now would set me back quite a bit. and with kids & still grad school loans to pay off, I don't have a lot of flexibility in what I can do with my career. But I'm not planning to sit out the cultural wars indefinitely and let others fight those battles.

I have nothing but respect for the attorneys who represent the victims of the church; they have a tough fight against the odds, and often wind up alone and get ostracized by "polite" society for it.

It's common sense that he would back that bill. If there are fewer abortions there are more kids he can molest.

I would go farther and submit that predatory anything should not be priests.

Being a a predator and being a priest seems to me counterintuitive.

I'd quibble more with his claim their intent is to bring the church down.

I think their intent is to prey on children; the church, because of its secrecy, and relationship to the public, including the public's trust (which is completely undeserved at this point) is just a means to an end for them.
