Trading Fister

Appears to be a very dumb move by Seattle. When you're rebuilding you trade a guy like Ichiro for prospects. Not a young, effective SP locked up for 3-4 yrs w/a reasonable contract. That was an irresponsible move by the GM. Dombrowski may have just fleeced the M's. Unreal.

While I agree, they did get a lot of young talent from us in return.
They did, and a couple may work out. But still, a guy like Fister is the last guy you trade when you're on the downside, looking up. This could end up being a textbook example of how and why good teams stay good and poor teams stay poor.

Agreed. I'm not sure they would have had a ton of suitors for their vets though. Anybody calling wanted Felix, Fister, Pineda or Smoak.

They wanted to deal Vargas but he is getting paid too much and is up for arbitration. They needed to move some pitching for prospects because their biggest needs are position players. While the trade has been great for the Tigers it also makes sense for the M's.

Same way we got Miggy. Why would Florida trade him? A 24 year old, already stud, for two unknowns. We hope this works out the same way.

I liked it then, like it now. Wells is a nice platoon outfielder, he hasn't figured out how to hit righties and I doubt he ever will. At least not enough to be a full time player. Furbush is a bottom of the rotation guy on an average team, I think. Absolutely nothing special. Martinez may eventually make it a good trade for the M's. They traded for the future, so it's too early to declare it a failure for them.

Fister looked like a guy for their future. That's what didn't make sense. IDK. It could end up being a complete ripoff for Det, but I hate to see weak teams become weaker bc of lame moves like this. Fister should have brought the M's a "can't miss" prospect.

The move looks pretty damn good for us so far. After selling us a lemon in Washburn, the M's deserved this.

Fister is playing significantly better in Detroit than his previous stats indicated he would. Does it mean that he's better now or just running well and soon to slide back to being merely above average? Time will tell. I definitely think 9 starts do not provide the answer to that question.

I'm not sure its significantly. Well he has pitched well here but a 3.3 era for Seattle was pretty darn good. We traded for a pitcher that was already getting it done.

Sure, he's a good pitcher. Especially this year, even with Seattle. He had been a 4 ERA pitcher previously, though.

So he's 2 runs less in Detroit this year with his nine starts. He's been great, but I don't really think he's a 2 ERA guy over the long haul. He might be a 3 guy, or even back to a 4. Either way, he's a good add to the rotation.

He only has one season in before 2011 so I'll take that with a grain of salt as well. Best trades in baseball are for young, major league players.

And the thing I'm excited about, his low walk total. Nothing worst than throwing out good stuff only to walk guys.

I honestly thought it was an even trade pending the development of Martinez.. If he ends up crashing and burning, then advantage Detroit... If he ends up being an elite player it's either a push or advantage M's.. We all know Wells is a platooner who could develop into a 3rd everday OF and Furbush is at best a 4th starter.. You have to think Fister could get better as well since he's only 27..

I would also mention that Ruffin has a chance to be a decent setup guy.. Just like Pauley could very well have an increased bullpen role in Detroit..

Not all trades have to have a winner and loser. If we win the WS this year, Fister was a good trade, no matter what happens.

I knew Fister was good...but not ridiculous.

RE: Ichiro. Seattle can't trade him b/c of their fanbase. They could face an all out revolt at the box office if he were traded. I thought they should have considered to try trading King Felix for 10 players.
