Don't remember Waynes getting beat badly deep much this year, even in the Baylor game it took a perfect throw for him to get beat, really had blanket coverage. Seems like Drummond and Hicks got beat often though. With Drummond it was more of a scheme that opposing offenses started using to put their fastest receiver in the slot against one of our safeties. I think we see that tweaked this year on our defense although Nicholson is much faster than any safety we've had here in recent years so he might be more up to the task. Hicks seemed to have good enough speed, but his jam was terrible and he needs to get a lot stronger. Cox is very strong if he wins the corner spot, and has the straight line speed, but seems a little stiff to me to be played corner. There's several younger guys that could step up and start.
As for Waynes and the 4.31, it's not surprising in that we all heard he was running that in practice and better. But it's still a little surprising because every team's fanbase hears BS about 4.3 speed from the "insiders". Um fans thought Fuchess had 4.33 speed because that's what people reported he had run in practice. We were also told for years that Langford was one of the fastest guys on the team, his 4.42 was impressive. Waynes was the first person in his family not to go to college on a track scholarship, so it's in his blood.
Who's next? We have heard RJ Shelton is the fastest guy on the team, hard to imagine he's faster than Waynes though. RS FR Corner Justin Williams ran a 10.5 100 and a 20.7 200 in high school so he's going to be a burner too. RB Madre London ran a 10.7 100m in high school and is 215 lbs so he's going to be a home run threat at RB. What's crazy is that TJ harrell also ran a 10.7 100m in high school and he's going to play LB for us and is already 220 lbs.
I know every fanbase for every team always thinks the young guys on their team are more athletic than the guys that are leaving, but I think that's clearly the case with our roster. RJ Williamson is also supposed to be a freak athlete with excellent speed, he definitely showed it easily outrunning UM's fastest player on that pick 6 last season.
