Trey Flowers, the top FA pass rusher in NFL, signs with Detroit, starts on PUP

Flowers can play any position on the DL. Hopefully he will stay healthy and play all 16 games. Ziggy was good but killed us when he was out. Nice to see this position filled with the top free agent at the position

Also in terms of holes

You can win a super bowl with one or two holes

If they dont get a vet edge lb to pair with flowers, hand, kennard, okwara and first round pick. They will live

Same if some no name is at right guard

Cb2 a little more important but if they have a pass rush it could be slay, mike ford and coleman. They prob sign a cheaper vet cb at some point

I'm digging all the signings but the Flowers signing makes me cringe a bit. He does everything well but not great. IMO, a DE that is going to get the type of money that he's about to get, he has to average more than 7 sacks a year. It's that simple. And if he can't manage doing that then he better be a strip sack King or force fumbles at will boss lol.

The kid is only 25 and hopefully still improving... Has to mean something landing the best edge guy available right? We had to do something after letting Ansah walk, and this was probably the best move we could have made getting the top guy. People like Mitch were saying shit like why would anyone like Barr, Collins, or Flowers even come here..... So in that sense this is a big win IMO because not even a lot of our own fans thought we'd land him. Like I said, hopefully he only keeps getting better and proves this was a good signing.

Amendola and the CB are overpaid duds. James is better than we had. Flowers is a nice piece to the defense he wants to run but in all honesty hes going to be the highest paid 7 sack guy in the league.

Olivier Vernon accepts your challenge.

I really like this deal. I thought they'd end up going full Lions and paying the guy $19-20 mill per year. $17 mill is more than reasonable considering he was the top guy in free agency and is only 25 years old.

The most important part of Flowers' game is his versatility. I see a lot of you getting hung up on the '7 sacks per year stuff'. I would implore you to step back and look at the whole picture first. Among edge defenders, Flowers played the 4th most snaps AWAY from the edge. It wasn't always his job in New England to just beat the tackle and get to the QB in New England. His pass rush grade when playing away from the edge was actually elite in 2017 and 2018 placing him in the top 5 of all DL.

He's also fantastic against the run. With Zeke Elliot, Melvin Gordon, Delvin Cook, and Saquon Barkley on the schedule for 2019, that's pretty important. I'm excited to see this defense against the run next year after how they finished 2018.

Bottom line is that I think it's clear Quinn/Patricia value Trey's versatility and youth. They're making an investment in a player that they think will continue to get better and will allow flexibility in defensive schemes. And he's not making any more than Ziggy did with the franchise tags. It's a win in my book.

I will agree he was the most scheme versatile pass rusher in FA.

Is he the best Edge....no lol....hes not even an edge.
Is he the best pass rusher....fuck no....Houston smokes him. Fowler is better imo.

Dee Ford is on the market eventough hes technically not a free agent....im sure hed tell you hes a better pass rusher than flowers.

He going to be a great upgrade for us at DE which means Ashawn and Hand fight it out for other DE and poof we have some quality dline depth. Something we havent had in years.

Good signing ....actually paid less than i thought we would need to to get a guy like him.

The numbers are in on the Flowers deal. He got 5 yr 90 mil for 56 mil in guarantees and 40 mil signing bonus.
We paid Ziggy 17.1 mil last year

He got paid pretty much what I thought he would, maybe about a million a year less.

And while he's not the best pass rusher in the game, he's young, and has the potential to still get better. You don't get guys at his level, and his age, in free agency very often.

The Lions have made the Trey Flowers signing official -- announcing it on their Twitter feed. Flowers signed a five-year deal worth $90 million, including a $28.07 million signing bonus and total guarantees (both full and for injury-only) of $56 million. His 2019 cap hit of $6.419 million is manageable. He has guaranteed non-bonus money worked into the first three years of his deal and roster bonuses he can achieve in the final two years of his contract.
