This does not surprise me a bit. I seriously hope it changes if true. Take it with a grain of salt because it's "anonymous sources" and 2 guys that recently transferred, but still disappointing that it's the perception and I even remember a conversation, either on WTKA or maybe during a game early in the season, where the person who gave the take was surprised by the fact that the senior QB wasn't voted captain by the team.

?There wasn?t a lot we could do because Shea was our starting quarterback, but we wanted to let him and our coaches know we weren?t happy with his work in the summer ? both Joe [Milton] and Dylan [McCaffrey] outworked him, and then Coach immediately went against our decision and named him a captain,? a recent departure shared. ?Guys weren?t happy.?

I saw this in another thread. Pretty weak if you ask me. If you are going to throw someone under the bus like that, be man enough to put your name to it.

If it's all true, I wonder if Jim has his QB picked out already for next year? Or if he was just in love with Shea?

The whole team was man enough to put their name on it when they didn't want Shea as a captain. Then Harbaugh named him a captain anyway.

No worries the new Michigan motto "it's okay to be decent."

Maybe there's some truth to what Anonymous Person said here, but it's still just one (1) person's perception and they don't speak for the whole team.

Patterson started the season poorly, but he got a lot better and the team really seemed to rally during the PennState game.

I watched all the games, and that's what I saw. Then we lost to an Ohio State team that pays their players, and then they lost to a Clemson team that pays their players even more money. That's what happened. Doesn't change my judgment of who should be our coach.

I'm sure Patterson had his own supporters, and - even assuming McCaffrey or Milton would've played better - would have had other negative results for team morale, so it's not like there was a clear black/white decision Harbaugh faced.

Why dwell on one guy's perception from the off season? People say all sorts of shit, for all sorts of reasons. it's not like we're conducting an inquiry here where everyone is going on the record, and it's going to result in us getting a new coaching staff.

I didn't check the other thread first so that's my bad. I agree that the guys that said it should man up but that could be the author covering, it could be the author putting words in their mouths or flat out lying.

I don't want a new coaching staff but if this is true it would explain a lot. When Harbaugh came in it was all about how it was going to be a meritocracy and the best player would play regardless of the way he got there or how many stars the recruiting sites gave him. That type of mentality was the reason he took a 5 win team and doubled their win total in his first year. It made everyone better. I just want to see this staff get their shit together and get back to doing things that way. Sure, maybe Shea was still the best but if he's golfing while everyone else is working did he really earn his spot?

Plus, if the staff is playing favorites that's a great way to lose the locker room and in turn have guys leave. If this is true and Milton and McCaffery were both pissed enough to leave, nobody could blame them and it could put the program a horrible spot for the 2020 season.

That's exactly how Hoke lost the team. Former players have stated that he played favorites and let certain players get away with things others couldn't. Team went to shit after he lost the locker room.

Not saying that Hoke is anywhere near Harbaugh as a coach, but his ability to succeed died because he lost the locker room. Doesn't truly matter how great of a coach you are if your message is falling on deaf ears.

Yep. "Country club" was the term used by those guys to describe the locker room as well. The same can be said of the QB. Which is exactly what the players did when they didn't vote for QB1 to be a captain.

You know this? The whole team?

Maybe he lost the vote by 1 or 2 votes

We don't know

Insert Alabama for Clemson, but yeah

It was supposedly 2 players that left. They left for 1 or multiple reasons. It is entirely possible that they have an axe or 3 to grind with the coaching staff for various reasons. They might've thought they deserved more playing time, but they didn't get it. Maybe they did deserve it, maybe they didn't.

IF someone said these things, because it is entirely possible this is all a lie, then why do we care about their opinions?

Yes, a lot went wrong, this year. I'm sure this happens at a lot of schools. Players leave, they didn't like some things that were going on. They want to trash the place.

D McCaffrey had a lot of PT until he got KTFO'd. I doubt Milton was the answer. Why are we still talking about that? Maybe Dylan takes over if he doesn't get KTFO'd.

This golfing thing? We have no idea how much time Shea was golfing or not golfing. Are we going to say that players aren't allowed to enjoy themselves over the summer at all? No golfing, no video games, no nothing. Must be football 24-7. Must have voice overs going on while sleeping. These guys are 18-23. They aren't going to do football all day every day.

Despite Justin Fields saying shit, I'm sure he didn't do football all day every day either.

Or they started losing games and doing stupid off the field shit. Leaving concussed QB's in the game, apologizing to rivals after losing to them, and a whole slew of other things.

If Harbaugh goes 5-7 next season, I'll be the first one making a "Fire Harbaugh!" sign

Let's not start comparing Harbaugh to Hoke

Hoke left an obviously injured QB in a game to make a point to fans that were crying for that QB to play more and then that QB got concussed and Hoke still left him in there. Harbaugh wasn't going to do that with Dylan McCaffrey. That is good.

There were some obvious reasons why Michigan was 9-4 this year.

Remember when we were all happy that Alabama missed that FG at the end of the Alabama-Auburn game? yeah. That was great, until it meant that ALabama was not going to the college football playoff as the #4 team in the nation and instead they were lining up against MIchigan in the Citrus Bowl.

Yes, Shea wasn't as good as we all thought he was going to be. He got banged up in the Army game. Dylan got knocked out against Wisconsin. Then they protected Shea for the rest of the season. I'm of the belief that he was told to not run on a lot of zone reads, because they didn't want him to get hurt. They weren't going to put Dylan out there after Shea started having good games.

You think this D would have been better with David Long, Rashan Gary, and Devin Bush? All left a year early for the NFL and contributed on their teams in year 1. Then Bush's replacement, Josh Ross, gets hurt for the rest of the season. We all shrugged and said, "they'll be ok." Well, they weren't.

Excuses, valid reasons, whatever. Hey! Maybe we can just buy some bs put out there by this guy trying to sell *clicks* on what some former players may or may not have said.

Am I happy with 9-4? Nope! Do I expect improvement next season? Yep!

I doubt anyone on the team or that is part of the program is OK with how the season went.

Why not they've been uninspired for years. They aren't bothered by losing to OSU year after year and have no need to win divisions, or titles based on the fact they have the wrong head coach.

"worked harder" is a rather loose term. When Tebow came to Denver, all anyone said was "gotta love the guy, he's the first one out there in the morning and last to leave practice in the evening! Nobody works harder than Tim Tebow!"

but the same was true of Peyton Manning ...only he was a good quarterback with a vastly superior skillset.

McCaffrey had the collarbone recovery and Milton is a year younger. I hope both work just as hard or harder this next year, now that Shea is gone, and I'm fine with either as starter, though I'd expect dual QBs with McCaffrey the "starter."

Indeed.

I'd argue that playing pro football is not "hard work" under any real world sense of the term.

They have to work out and practice a couple hours a day, if that, for part if the year.

If they had to, say, pick strawberries for a living, they'd go crazy and kill themselves.
