Detroit Lions rookie linebacker Kyle Van Noy underwent a successful surgical procedure Thursday to repair a core muscle injury.
The team confirmed, releasing the following statement:
"Kyle Van Noy underwent a successful surgical procedure today due to a core muscle injury. We will continue to monitor Kyle's progress and provide updates when appropriate."
The Lions? second-round draft pick first noticed the injury in a light practice a day before the team?s third preseason game against Jacksonville.
He saw a specialist this week and the surgical procedure was recommended.
?He?s still got to see the doctors, and the doctors are going to tell him he?s going to a specialist to take a look at it,? head coach Jim Caldwell said earlier this week. ?We?ll make a determination at that point in time where he is.?
It?s too soon after the procedure to forecast how long Van Noy might be out.
As the Lions pare their roster down to 53 by Saturday?s 4 p.m. deadline, a decision will have to be made on whether they?ll look at it week-to-week or place him on injured reserve with the designation to return.
In the meantime, expect third-year linebacker Tahir Whitehead to fill the versatile SAM linebacker spot Van Noy was slated to play. Veteran Ashlee Palmer is likely to see some work there too.
?It?s really frustrating,? Van Noy said earlier this week. ?I?ve never been injured until I got here.?
Van Noy has also dealt with a thumb injury in training camp, though it didn?t force him to miss any time.
