Victor Martinez

From ESPN Tiger's page;

"According to Inside Edge tracking, Victor Martinez has 12 well-hit balls this season that haven't gone for hits, the highest number in the league."

At some point these will start falling for hits, it's ridiculous how unlucky hes been so far.

"Don't cloud the issue with facts. You are just hand picking stats to justify your stance."

VMART looks very uncomfortable up there. He is in a funk. His swing looks late, slow, and indecisive. Time for some splinter butt.

Exactly. And Don Kelly looks great at the plate. His has a nice smooth, aggressive swing. Time to get Don more PT because he looks like he is ready to hit.

I'm sure benching him will solve the problem instantly. While VMart sits on the bench and gets better *facepalm*, Don Kelly can hit 5th wow us with his baseball skills.

V-Mart will get better. He will not be as good as he was in 2011. My guess is he will hit about 10 HRs, 20-30 doubles and hit about .280

Victor Martinez will hit himself out of his slump.

Signed, Yogi Berra

Or we could replace VM with that guy on the bench who is tearing the cover off the ball. Yeah, I thought so.

DD apparently doesn't place much of any importance upon their who comprises their bench players season to season. Not that they could obtain many if any part time players who are stellar defensively, consistently hit in the high 200s or better, and who are willing to accept niche roles on the team. But the FO likely could do better than using the same tired AAAA retreads, over and over for several seasons in a row, (Kelly, Raburn..et.al.) if not even for MUCH longer (Santiago). They most likely would still have Laird as backup C on their bench, if he hadn't left for greener pastures in the off-season. (not that G$ would have necessarily been worse than Pena is).

Every team needs or has a Jayson Nix or Brendan Harris. The problem is when all 3 spots on the bench are occupied by the same player.

This team does not have a Gates Brown, Johnny Grubb, John Wockenfuss or Champ Summers type player. A Player that isn't a full time starter, can come off the bench and get a big hit, or, for a brief time, cover for an injury.

This team has not had a quality bench since the 80s.

I guess my thought was wrong about Victor being unlucky with some line drives at or near outfielders to catch, and that they will soon start to drop in.

We gave stiffs like cringe, shinebox, borscht, and delmon months to get it together in the past few years, so a hitter of Victor's caliber deserves the same imo.

I agree. I think there was only one person on this board that advocates benching him.

idk who that is who wants to bench him.

Thing is, Victor hasn't been in the batter box for real meaningful games in 18 months...end of playoffs from Oct. 2011 ST is what it is, sometimes pitchers just throwing certain pitches and all that.
I'm sure at least hoping he along with the dynamic duo of legendary Lloyd and toby harrah have looked at 2011 film to discern something slightly off in his swing and all that.
But, with some of our coaches part of the 'old boy network of recycled coaches and friends of the managers'.....

I trust Leyland on this. He knows his players better than anyone. IF he wants to start him, then I trust it is to get his timing back. Vmart has always been a professional hitter so I give him the benefit of the doubt. Vmart has been unlucky to some extent but not as obvious as that article made it sound. Looks a little like some DD, JL Kool-aid too me. He will get out of it.

Considering that VMart still has yet another year remaining on his $$50 MM, 4 year contract with the ballclub, that factor alone means that he will get the lion's...err..oops..sorry...the tiger's share of ABs in the DH slot, regardless of his performance this season.

As I have posted before, it is too bad that he is incapable of being Avila's backup this season or likely the next, which would have increased his value to the team, and would have given the ballclub a bit more flexibility with their 25-man roster, by perhaps adding another BP arm, or perhaps a platoon DH/bench player.

If I'm not mistaken Victor has had bad April's in the past, even with the Indians, add that to the fact that he missed all last year this isn't a huge surprise. He will break out soon
