We/Us vs Michigan

I've seen people shredded on the old board for saying things like "we" won or Ohio* won't beat "us" this year. Which then turns into a "you can't say us/we because you didn't play for Michigan" or because "you didn't go to Michigan". For me personally it depends on who I'm talking to. On this board its always 'Michigan". With friends and family it's mostly "us" and "we". And yes, I am this damned bored today.

Depends, I tend to show ownership of things I talk about. Although I didn't attend UM, I tend to refer to the team as We/Us because I have a fair amount of passion for the team. I guess if I always referred to them as Michigan and had no personal connection I wouldn't give a shit if they won or lost.

Flame me, I don't care its just how I am. Also bored today.

If it's your favorite team, you refer to them as "us". It's as simple as that. It pisses me off when people say not to say it like that because we're not a part of the team. I disagree. As much money as we put into Michigan and Detroit teams, I think we have a right to call "our" team "us" or "we". They may be in the action on the field, but I think it's safe to say that we all get emotional throughout the season with them.

Michigan is MY team. WE are going to the sugar bowl. I hope the boys bring US home a BCS bowl win!

I have alot of pride and passion for Michigan, I guess it depends on who I'm talking to if they are not a Michigan fan I say Michigan if they are I say "we", "us".

I love this statement. So true.

I used to always say Michigan or Lions etc but now, fk it I say we or us.

I am an offical booster of the UofM athletics department, so I say "we"

Fuck anyone who doesn't like it.

If you own a single piece of merchandise then you have placed money in the team and therefore you actually do own a small, virtually insignificant but not non-existent, piece of the team in essence, so saying "we" or "us" isn't necessarily untrue in my book. That whole thing was likely started by Packer fans who "actually own a piece of the team", as if any of us wouldn't buy into our team if given the opportunity.

There's a reason it's called "home field advantage" because the fans impact the game. So while we don't play I think anyone, like myself, screaming, and losing my voice, during games qualifies anyone to say "us" or "we". Furthermore, what's the point of sports if you don't have some personal/emotional connection to the team? No one "graduated" or anything from any pro sports team. So is no one allowed to say "we won" when talking about the tigers? That's silly.

I use the terms we and us. Its just convenient. I don't really think anyone that uses those terms actually considers themselves part of the team.

I think context matters. People sound stupid talking smack and saying "We kicked your ass!" or "We dominated" as opposed to "We need to protect the ball this week against this defense."

I also have a few work colleagues for whom this is a pet peeve and for whom I will think about my choice of words.
