ESPN might have stolen this kid's thunder, they released the story before he got a chance to announce it.

He's a raw talent, but he can shoot at 6-10. Has freakish length, he's got longer arms than Deyonta Davis. Will play the stretch 4 in college. Davis is a really good comparison physically. Jackson is a better shooter and has better handles, but Davis was a better shot blocker although Jackson is close to elite as a shot blocker too. Davis seemed more fundamentally sound, but Jackson seems a little more talented. And he has a full year before he gets on campus to add some weight, has a good frame and will probably play at 6-10, 240 as a freshman. Depending on how he develops I see him as a border line 1 and done player, but would probably stay 2 years.

Edit: He announced his decision to ESPN, so it was how he wanted to do it. Pretty low key.

must be pretty raw if Davis was more sound fundamentally since fundamentals seemed to be Davis' weak spot and why he got benched for Goins and Wollenman. Seems like he is further along and got more early attention than Davis as a recruit though.

Davis got benched because of perimeter D not fundamentals. Davis was very fundamentally sound in that he was always square to the basket, held the ball high, and always kept his head up. And he blocked out very well for a freshman too. And he had some post moves.

Physically they are very similar, Jackson is a bit taller and has longer arms, but they both had to add some weight. Jackson is a much better shooter and ball handler. Neither are great leapers, but with those wingspans neither has to be, they can dunk easily without having to sky.

Huge pickup, we made up a lot of ground late with this one. the 2017 recruiting cycle was not the best for us, at least now we have one start to build this class around, hopefully we can still land Bowen or Scruggs. Jackson is listed as a wing, has more of that kind of game than DD. The negative recruiting against Izzo was that he was going to have to play exclusively in the post, not really the case, I see him as more of an Adrien Payne than Deyonta.

6-6 4 star PG Noel Eastern and 6-7 5 star SF Brian Bowen are considered heavy MSU leans. It would be shocking if we didn't land both. Scruggs and Gary Trent Jr are long shots at SG.

Xavier Tillman is Green if we want him, but I get the feeling the staff wants to wait on Brandon McCoy (5 star 6-10 C/PF) instead. They might take both McCoy and Tillman, but I am not sure. Jackson, Bowen, Eastern, McCoy, and Tillman would be a better class than 2016.

2017
McCoy #8 overall player
Bowen #17
Jackson #22
Eastern #70
Tillman #89

2016
Bridges #12
Langford #20
Winston #33
Ward #41

Nice writeup from Eric Bossi

That we rank Jaren Jackson among the top 15 players in the country says plenty about where we see him as a prospect,? Rivals.com analyst Eric Bossi said. ?However, I want to go deeper than that because I think of anybody in the five-star territory he may have the biggest ceiling for improvement. Over the last year he's grown a few inches and gone from a guy who teased with inside out ability to one that is consistently productive. He runs the floor, he has a great basketball frame and he can play in the post or facing the hoop. On top of that, he's just turning 17 years old today making him a full year young for the graduating senior class so I can't help but think he has an upside that some of his older classmates don't."

His age is a big plus. Although he'd be eligible, he's more likely to stay being so young. And having a dad who played in the NBA and is financially secure will help too. Kid will likely stay at east two seasons.

Davis did not get yanked for Goins and Wollenman because of perimeter defense. That's nonsense. He got beat inside and out. He still shouldn't have been benched for lesser players - that's more Izzo's fault than his but it wasn't only because of perimeter defense.

@therealjnari_ Jackson measured 6-11 (in shoes) with 7-4 wingspan & 9-1 standing reach @ La Lumiere combine today thanks @JeffRabjohns

Wow!!! And the kid plays some 3 at that size. Those measurements would have been 4th in wingspan and 3rd in standing reach at this year's NBA combine which had a lot of good 7 footers at it.

No way he isn't a 1 and done with that length. NBA GMs drool over players that long who can handle the ball and shoot.

Instead of playing him 8 minutes izzo ill play him 4 minutes :lmao:

Dude also had a 30" standing vertical, impressive. Means his vertical is probably over 40" when he is able to take a step and jump. With length and athleticism like that he's going to be a human highlight reel.
