What I received for Christmas

This post is about what I got for Christmas. I'm saying that up front and in the title to prevent people from reading this expecting some more worthy topic. Nope. This is a show-and-tell post.

I can't remember ('cause my memory is that terrible) if I talked about this during the ND-Under the Lights Game, but I got a phone call mid-game from my mom. She's a volunteer at Potter Park Zoo in Lansing and had to miss watching the game to work at a fundraising event. The event included a silent auction and someone had donated some Michigan football related items. My mom called to tell me that the event was halfway over, and nobody was bidding on the Michigan stuff. (No surprise, it's Spartan territory and what Michigan fan is going to go to a zoo fundraiser during the Mich-ND game?) She says there's a Brady Hoke autographed football in a case, a Bo Schembechler autograph, framed alongside a picture of his last game as coach, and an autographed Woodson jersey.

So I'm flipping out, "Heck yeah, if they'll let you bid, go for it! I would love any of those things." I don't remember what the minimum bid were set at, but they were less than the going rate for such things. At that point, my wife took over the phone conversation and asks me which item would be my favorite. There were actually a couple other Michigan items I was less interested in (like a Woodley Steeler jersey) so I tell her that it's all nice, but if they could land any of those 3 items I would be over the moon. At that point, I had a pretty good idea of what I would get for my birthday (in November)...I had it narrowed down to 3 things anyway. The next day, I search for something on my wife's computer, and I see those 3 items in her recent search bar. She's sitting next to me and flips out a little over me ruining the surprise. I tell her the surprise isn't ruined. I had a pretty good idea why they were asking me which items I liked and I had no idea which one they got. November rolls around, and guess what? My wonderful wife got me a Hoke-autographed football! I couldn't be happier.

I figure that's the end of it. Then Christmas rolls around and my wife and mother-in-law give me the Schembechler photo! ...and then my parents give me the Woodson jersey! My sneaky family got all of it and I had absolutely no clue! My wife wants a bigger house now so that we can put together a room to display this stuff and watch football in.

See?

There's always an angle.

I told you he was naive.

I wouldn't have burst his bubble though.

Always. Wife also got me a brewing kit. I scorched the oven top terribly...feel sorta obligated to clean the kitchen now.

I'm not calling BS on whether or not you have those items, I'm calling BS on that you received them this Christmas. This exact same story was posted a year or so ago.

Wasn't me and I never heard that story. This story, including the timing, is the truth. Plus, there probably weren't too many Brady Hoke signed footballs out there a year ago.

...and the Schembechler picture is still in packaging on the corners.

...or maybe...you didn't hear this story a year ago. Maybe you heard it 3-4 months ago when I 1st posted about the auction.

That's it. I apologize. I knew that I had read the line about the mother working at Potter Zoo bidding on michigan items before.

Nice get FWIT. :)

No worries. I couldn't believe someone else had that story, so I was on the fence between defending myself from the call of bullshit...or wondering if you were pulling my leg and I was falling for it (seeing how I've already been reminded in this thread that I can be naive.)

by the way... since I was at the actual game, I didn't read your posts about the Dogfishhead victory beer after we beat osu, but, how was it?

yes... I looked up your past posts, and read about it, but I still want to hear it first hand after all years of buildup.

Honestly, I was in too euphoric a state to judge anything. I drank all but 2 shots of the beer. I gave samples to a couple interested parties. One of them correctly pointed out that the defining characteristic of the beer is the caramel. It's not as hoppy as you'd expect, it's sweet... caramelized sugar sweet. The alcohol is surprisingly not overwhelming. It's there, but I was expecting it to hit like watered down whiskey and it doesn't. My very biased perception is that it is the greatest beer of all time, but the two other parties (a Sparty and a 'bama fan) thought it was just ok. I'm looking to get another bottle.

who was the one who correctly pointed out the defining characteristic? the spartan or the bama fan? I'm surprised either of them could do anything correctly.

The Spartan.

Man, makes my Junior Hemingway autographed pic from UTL seem weak!
