What is average for a positional player?

Each position has its own average and then there is the overall average. Value is based on wins above or below a prescribed norm. Wins Above Replacement (WAR) actually utilizes a norm below average. Win Probability Added (WPA) tries to capture win expectancy from an offensive standpoint.

Runs Created is a way of expressing win expectancy by giving run value. So too, does the defensive metric UZR/150. For UZR/150, Zero is average.

So, if we take context neutral offensive stats (RC/650 last 3 years away) and add them to a player’s UZR/150 over the last 3 years, we get a run value that can be ranked. The average can be computed and the mean for everyday players can be extracted.

Average Last 3 years Away
72.6 RC/650 .252 BAVG .313 OBP .394 SLG .707 OPS 14.1 PA/BB

Wow... Kiermaier is head and shoulders above everyone else defensively. I know he is an elite defender, but didn't expect it to be such a wide gap between him and the field.

Yes...and DH

Great. Separating it by position really puts things in perspective for me. Not that these stats are fool proof but at least they are consistent for everybody and you are comparing apples to apples for the most part. Thanks for putting in the time and effort to inform us!
