What is this blasphemy

Looks to me like speculation based on a Mayhew quote that has nothing to do with trading.

^ That's my reaction

Just because the Lions managed to win without CJ doesn't mean they can "live without him".

Reading the article shows that the author knows nothing. Just wrote a sensational headline to attract people to their site.

Lol I swear people just want to see us fail. There is absolutely no good reason to trade calvin right now. It would probably be 1 million draft picks and only hurts our chances of doing something bigger going forward. All out this year to make a splash. Let's get rid of the best playmaker in the nfl.....makes perfect sense...

I put about as much credibility to that site as I do The Onion.

As others mentioned, the article doesn't make a lot of sense. Sounds like someone is throwing shit against the wall to see if anything will stick. He hasn't missed many games in his career at all. He has been dinged up a lot but has still been a game changing playmaker since he came into this league. No one in the Lions organization is mad or fed up with Calvin. He's the perfect citizen and teammate and wide receiver.

I am always a proponent of cutting bait BEFORE the decline. As good as he is WR's are replaceable.

The end could be coming for Calvin Johnson in Detroit

Ndamukong Suh may not be the only top-two pick who could soon be bidding Detroit farewell.

With Suh, the second overall pick in 2010, poised to hit the open market in March, the Lions likewise could decide to tell Calvin Johnson, the second overall pick in 2007, to hit the road at about the same time.

Crazy as it seems, Johnson carries a cap number of $20.558 million into the next league year. While a restructuring that converts, for example, $10 million of his $12.5 million salary into a signing bonus could cut the cap number down to $12.558 million, the maneuver would drive his 2016 cap number of $24 million up to $26 million.

At some point, Johnson may have to take less money in order to stick around. If he doesn?t want to do that, the Lions may have to part ways with him.

Johnson?s health will be a major factor in the final analysis. While he has missed only seven games in seven-plus seasons, Johnson lately seems to be always injured, always either missing practice or limited. And always questionable to play. Currently, he?s dealing with a chronic ankle injury that may cause him to miss a game or two.

No matter good Johnson may be when healthy, at some point the total analysis will point to spending that money elsewhere.

The fact that the Lions seemed to be interested in trading up from No. 10 to get receiver Sammy Watkins or receiver Mike Evans and ultimately decided to use that pick on hybrid tight end/receiver Eric Ebron (who has only eight catches for 80 yards this season) suggests that the Lions are at least considering the wisdom of reallocating their dollars away from a guy who is one of the best receivers in league history when healthy, but who isn?t healthy enough often enough to justify a cap number that shoots from $13 million to more than $20 million in less than six months.

Eh.... I could see it but I doubt the author has any "inside information" on the subject.

I remember years back the Seattle Mariners faced the prospects of losing Griffey, A-Rod, and Randy Johnson all in a 12 month span and the fans were freaking out.

And they did. They lost their three superstar . Johnson went to Houston in a deal that netted four good pitchers. A-Rod left for free. Griffey was traded to Cindy for Mike Cameron and prospects.

And the result for the Mariners? All that money freed up and all those prospects helped them tie the all time win record with 116 the following year.

Moving Calvin would bring back a lot and free up money to maybe resign a guy like Suh. I'm not of the mindset "We are winning without him" but I can't see it being the end of the world either especially if you get a lot in return.

What if we could get three number ones and a cornerback and a another number 2 receiver in the deal and then we get the Giant's to throw in Madison Baumgarner !!
