Get StartedHard to say but it has to be Gym Shorts (btw, awesome nickname whoever thought of it).
His disciple or lack there of, his approach that rushing 4 (always) is a good idea, and because he says such stupid things like this:
Instead, Schwartz said it was all about playing the running back whose style is best suited for the wet, rainy conditions in Pittsburgh, and that?s Joique Bell. Schwartz said Bush does his best work when he can cut on a dime on a good surface, and that on a wet day he?d rather have a straight-ahead runner like Bell carry the load in the running game.
And yet Bush gets more carries anyway. I could go on and on..
Even before he got hurt Bush had more carries. Bad decision after bad decision. Fake FG anyone.
I don't even fault him for the fake FG. He didn't have any confidence in our defense (which was the right call), and knew getting the FG wasn't going to be enough. Being up 11 vs up 7 was worth a lot more than the downside of only being up 4. With or without the field goal, the defense needed to get a stop, or at least keep the opponent out of the end zone. Schwartz made the right call in expecting the defense to fold. At that point, being up 11 was the only real way to expect a victory.
In the rain though? Gym Shorts is okay not using Bush as much in the rain but his P in the rain? Something wrong with that..
Always someone else's fault. Btw, I just watched that play again, Waddle went where he was suppose to.
Initial block but not at the second level. He stays tight and Hayward McClendon don't touch Martin.
He made the right call. But Pittsburgh had too many defenders, probably knew it was coming.
Well, it's not that hard to look at the things that both are supposed to do.
We have 4 O-linemen, 1 QB, 2RB, and 1 WR (Burleson) that were acquired during Mayhew's tenure and are quality players at their positions. The O-linemen are rather impressive given the assets used to acquire them (none high first rounders, only one cost us more than a 3rd round pick) and their strength as a unit.
We have 2 DTs, 2 DEs, 2LBs (counting Levy thanks to this year), and probably 1.5 DBs that are quality players or better. Our D-line is a legitimately high end unit, and our LBs are probably above average. Our DBs are a train wreck most of the time, but with Quinn, Delmas, and Houston (given injuries and responsibilities) there is about 1.5 quality players most games.
We have some talent obviously.
Now, we regularly rank as one of the most penalized teams in the league. Our offseasons are considered strong when we don't hear of more than one police report that includes our players. We've directly lost probably three games in the last 2 years due entirely to a coaching decision. Our defense, which has talent, regularly ranks in the bottom of the league and regularly gives up significant yardage early (which speaks directly to lack of readiness).
Anyone reading our roster would have to agree we have talent, so Mayhew is at least doing an adequate job.
Anyone watching our games would have to agree our team appears lost too often and undisciplined, so it's difficult to make an argument that Schwartz isn't hurting is.
This sums it up for me. I think Gym Shorts stinks. MM is more miss than hit, but after success this year and considering we can't hire a GM to save our lives I'd give him a pass.
