Why are you a Lions fan?

Born, raised and lived in the metro Detroit area for my 40 years. I've always loved all sports from a young age. My dad was a big sports fan and always watched the Lions, Wolverines, Tigers, Pistons, and Red Wings. So that's who I grew up watching and those are the only teams I root for now.

I'm kinda freaking out a bit because I'm moving out of state next month. So now I have to figure out all the packages I need to buy to watch the Tigers and Lions.

I know Directv, at least here in Arizona, I have a sports package that cost a few dollars a month and I get Fox Sports Detroit so all Tigers. Wings and Pistons I guess to.

As far as football that's a toughie, I got the NFL package free for the first year not sure what I'll do this season, not really looking forward to paying $380 or whatever it costs these days..

I figure besides born, raised and still reside in MI...gluten for punishment may be the only other logical reason

this...

its like asking why a crackhead likes crack eventhough they know it will kill them a some point.

Born n raised in sterling heights. Went to western for 6 years....no im not a doctor....yes I drank a lot of beer. Moved to san diego the day I graduated but cant fathom how people change teams. Detroit teams will always be my teams.

Online viewing is convenient and free. Even better if you have the capability to hook your computer up to your TV. I typically watch Lions games out at the bar and it shouldn't be difficult for you to find a spot to do the same if you don't want to watch online or pay for the ticket yourself. Tigers games I definitely stream.

The European feeds are usually clearer than the American feeds.

I have a small Mac Mini hooked up to my 72" TV, and an AppleTV hooked up to my 1080p projector with the 124" projector screen. I can stream the game to the living room TV through the Mac Mini, or if it's a night game or the conditions are dark enough, I can stream it over to the AppleTV in high def, and watch it outside in the back yard with the fire pit going.

I don't have cable in the house anymore. Between Hulu, Netflix, and Wiziwig, I can all the TV I want, and the other channels bore me anyway.

Wiziwig says you usually have to download stuff in order to watch the games. Have you had any problems with stuff you've downloaded?

any1 got a digibox? I wonder if all the nfl games can be seen using it? I know its kinda a new craze here in san diego and would be a cheap option to catch all the games for every major sports league.

Born and raised just outside Kalamazoo. Dad is from the east side of the state.....grew up a fan because of him.

Lived in NC for 3+ years from 2000 to 2004....so the Panthers are my #2.....but I find my interest in them declines every year since I moved back to Michigan.

Because I grew up in the Detroit area.

I can't understand people who grow up near a city with professional teams but don't root for their home team(s) (unless it's through family, then I understand it).

I have a friend who is from Detroit.....the actual city.....and claimed to be a diehard Detroit fan.

He graduated from Western and moved to Chicago for a job. After 2 years, all the sudden, he's a Bears/Cubs/Bulls fan and doesn't see a problem with changing over.

I do.

Weird

I lived in Chicago for 4 years and I hate Chicago teams even more now.

Unlike many of you, I was alive when the Lions won their last championship. I was nine months old and I will never forget the experience. I'm a Lions' fan because as a kid they had some good players that just could not somehow get it done. Guys like Dick LeBeau, Alex Karras, Roger Brown, Lem Barney, Ed Flannagan, Nick Pietrosante, Gail Cogdill, Pat Studstill (that's a great football name and he led the league in receiving yards in 1966 and was the Lions' punter for six seasons), Mel Farr and Charlie Sanders. It's that way now, too. It must be what I expect and appreciate, I suppose...consistent underachievement with flashes of brilliance.

Great list of past Lions.
I will add All-World Safety and the 'Original Hang Time Punter' Yale Lary.
Similar for me, I was 10 and have memories of them and Bobby Layne. He had this never say die attitude and this hard to describe, but as a kid I could see, this swagger breaking from the huddle to the line of scrimmage.
Moving before that 1957 Championship game and away from Briggs Stadium and Detroit was a bit traumatic as a 10 year old at first, but life goes on and I still am a fan of them, and the RedWings.
I did root for the Pistons when they had Gene Shue, Bailey Howell, Walter Dukes, Dave Bing and Bob Lanier, but the only boston team I have had a rooting interest in since moving here are the Celtics. My late father worked in the large building next to the old Boston Garden. On Saturdays, I would take the bus and train to North Station and an hour later meet for lunch and go back into the building with him and then he would drive us home at 4.
The thing is that the Celtics had their offices there in the building as well. Every couple to few weeks I would see Cousy, Heinsohn, Sam and KC Jones, Havlicek etc. so from their saying hi to me, I became a fan and have followed since.
I root for the Pistons, just not when they play the Celts.

I don't have the full passion that you guys have here each and every day, but I would be thrilled if they could Win the Super Bowl like all of you keep hoping for it. Have never stopped rooting for the Lions or RedWings.
Plus, I don't have the deep knowledge of the team and sport as all of you do, or like the fans of the RedWings who know their hockey inside out as well.

I have had many people I grew up with and worked with over the years ask me why I don't root for or like the redsox, bruins, or patriots. My heart is still and will always be with the Tigers, Lions, and RedWings.

I grew up in Detroit and my Dad and Grandfather were huge fans. So it was a no brainer. I love all the Detroit sports teams and could never change. Being a Lions fan is probably the most unrewarding organizations to be a fan of but it gets in your veins and its addictive.

Next door neighbour to Detroit. Raised in Windsor Ontario practically my whole life. Dad was and still is a huge Lions fan. Grew up a sports junkie like my Dad.

Season ticket holders for 4 years now with my Pops.

Fucking canuck. Jk

I grew up in Portland, Indiana and never really liked football until high school. I never had a team to root for (all of my family members are Colts fans, so I didn't want to root for them). I remember the 2001 Thanksgiving game when Mike McMahon ran around like a chicken with his head cut off, I decided to become a Lions fan that day. I've been a diehard since, and my wife hates it.

would love to attend a lions game or red wings. the only 2 i have yet to see in person

I don't even like Hockey but my advice to you is this. Spend the money and go watch a hockey game in person. As far as an NFL game....save the money and watch it on TV.

You deserve a medal..not many choose to be Lions fans.

OMG that was the last Thanksgiving game at the Silverdome. My dad took me to that game and I still have 2 of the towels they gave out. We should have won that damn game! Lost it on the final play McMahon should have rushed it in but he scrambled around in the backfield and threw it away for the loss. That place was rocking that whole game. Get goosebumps thinking about it.

Being an Army brat I've never had a home town but as child I went to a family reunion in Pontiac and took a visit to the silver dome. Where I met Herman Moore while having lunch, he signed a pennant for me. My uncle then bought me a Barry jersey and I haven't stopped since then despite the fact that everyone else in my family are dolphins fans.
