Why does everyone Forget about the 1989

The Michigan verses Illinois game was a great game and so was the title game verses Seton Hall. What a great offensive rebound put back by Higgins. What a great 6 games !!!!!

I didn't realize everyone forgot it. It was awesome.. Rice was awesome and I was very nervous on those last free throws. Clutch..

Unfortunately I was only 5 years old and wasn't watching sports just yet. The Fab Five were probably my earliest memories of really getting involved with a sports team. Them and the 92-93 Red Wings when they lost to Toronto in the first round. I watched like every single Red Wings game that year, and for the next 10+ years.

I do agree historically, people don't seem to mention that game, or that team. Maybe it was the lack of a sexy matchup with Seton Hall? It was a great game, and I used to watch it on ESPN Classic. They would show the Illinois game too.

The NCAA Tourney doesn't look back on that era and make mention of MICHIGAN or the UNLV teams. If it isn't Hurley/Laettner or Cherokee Parks or Jamal Mashburn ...basketball didn't happen.

I agree with you.

Semifinal game 27 or 28 lead changes . At the 6:10ish mark Brent says to Packer that Higgins could be key down the stretch in this Helter Skelter type game . Or something along those lines. People forget that Seton Hall was down 18 in the first half verses Duke in the other semifinal game and ended up beating them 95-78.
Big turn around .

I haven't forgot and I never will. Glen Rice is still my favorite player ever. Jalen and Juwan came close to being his equal to me because I was a little older, but I always wore 41 in every sport I played as a kid. Had to quit in high school because 41 was not an option with our unis. Still, one of my best friends screamed "Glen Rice!" at the top of his lungs every time I shot a three in high school. It was hard not to laugh sometimes.

I so wanted to beat North Carolina that year and every year we play them . Another team I cannot stand that seems to get off light when they have infractions against them.

Not sure the 2018 team matches up well with Unc but we are playing much better defense then when we lost to them . Call me crazy but I prefer not to have to Play Michigan state again. Beating them 3 times in a season would probably be extremely difficult.

It's funny you posted this thread today. I spent a good chunk of the morning trying to find a 1989 Championship t-shirt. I'm a bit bigger than when I was 6, so my old t-shirt doesn't exactly fit anymore. Unless I'm in the mood to wear a midriff! Show of the goods, put out the vibe.

I'm not having any luck finding a place that has a throwback. Homage has one, but every size is out of stock.

I don't think people talk about it because it was almost 29 years ago. I'm sure most UM fans over the age of 40 remember it. I remember the game because we listened to it on the radio on the way home from spring break. It is probably the only basketball game I have ever listened to on the radio.

Just watched an hour long special on BTN about the '89 championship run last Monday. No one has forgotten.

Well, Bob, UNC will be favored if they play, but here is a nice little write-up from Mgoblog about the potential UNC matchup

"The Tarheels did clobber Michigan early in the year, thanks in large part to a 15 minute stretch spanning halftime during which Michigan got three buckets. This team is not that team. Eli Brooks played 18 minutes; Zavier Simpson played one minute more than Ibi Watson did. Jordan Poole and Isaiah Livers both got their first real minutes against a real team—and on the road."

AKA today's Michigan team is not even close to the team that lost @UNC on Nov 29, 2017. That team barely beat CMU at home. UNC probably improved since then, too, but their improvement cannot be as drastic as MIchigan's has been. This potential match-up will be a neutral site game, as well, not @UNC, which can only help. IF Michigan plays UNC, i still do expect a ref bias towards UNC. It always happens...

I don't think people have forgotten about it - it's just that a lot of fans nowadays have grown up after that happened. It still comes up all the time for me - maybe that's because I know a lot of Seton Hall people where I live but I think all the college hoops fans I know that are my age remember it well. Or maybe I bring it up because I picked them to win it all in the first bracket pool I ever entered (a taboo pick as an MSU freshman) and won the pool. Maybe Illinois should come up with a t-shirt that says "Higgins was over the back - UofI 1989 National Champions"...
