Thoughts and opinions?

I personally can't stand it. We have too much talent on the D-line to be that unproductive and I believe its bc of the wide 9.

It was working the begining of the season. It was meant to get everything to run towards the inside and allow the LB to make tackles. They probably decided on it because improved LB and lack of DB. And because the DE were lined up so wide, but our DE, by just stats, had nice years.

As far as sacks, we had almost as many as last season plus more FF and more INT. So it wasn't the wide 9 that lost us games.

Our defense didnt play poor because of the wide 9. This needs to stop seriously. They have improved against the run but the cbs and safeties have been injured. This defense has been fine stop complaining. we have been one of the worst for over a decade now we are middle of the road.

OCs of opposing teams knew the Lions used it, and they probably had accumulated enough film on the Lions' D to often effectively game plan against it while looking/probing for weaknesses during this past season.

Its too predictable and easy to plan around. WE do basically no stunts or gimmicks along the line because of it which means teams are able to take Suh out of the game with double teams cause our DEs cant beat anyone 1 v 1. Could be a good idea if we had an elite DE...but we dont. Even then it shouldnt be something you go to as exclusively as we do. Watch a giants game and see how much they do along the dline to get people free to make plays....we do very little of that. Part of the reason why gunther should be in trouble this off season.

We stunt all the time. Even having one of the Dlineman "float" as Schwartz says. The wide 9 allows the DEs to have a great angle against the opposing offensive tackles making it much easier for them to get in the backfield (get TFL and Sacks). However, lining the DEs wide also allows the opposing offensive line to open up bigger holes in the B gaps. Which means our LBs have a higher responsibility on the run. Technically, if our LBs can stuff the run while being at a slight disadvantage our Dline would always have the advantage. The wide 9 allowed our DEs to rack up close to 30 sacks this year. Our 4 DEs (LJax, KVB, Avril, and Young) averaged over 2 sacks per game this year. Average that out for the season (Since LJax, Young, etc missed some games) 33+ sacks from our DEs. Which is better than the total sacks for 14 teams.

Going away from a wide 9 would mean the following:

- Our run defense would be much improved.
- Our pass rush would be much less effective.
- With our pass rush less effective, our secondary would be beaten more.

The wide 9 allows our pretty good DEs to look much better than they are. Our main problem this year is penalties allowing drives to continue and poor DB play.

Thats the thing... it was working early and not late... Other teams adjusted and Gunther did not... It should only be used a few plays a game.. It does not stop the run at all..

The Wide 9 is tailor made for New Orleans to exploit, they chip with their TEs, backs, and WRs and then the DEs are basically useless that play. You saw it all game long today.
