Read it somewhere but heard he may go to the Phillies for Blanton

Phillies Have Interest In Yankees' Ramiro Pena
By Zach Links [March 25, 2012 at 4:33pm CST]
With second baseman Chase Utley sidelined with no timetable to return, the Phillies plan to start Freddy Galvis and are hoping to bolster their infield depth behind him. With that in mind, General Manager Ruben Amaro & Co. have some interest in Yankees utilityman Ramiro Pena, according to George A. King III of the New York Post.

Earlier today, Utley spoke to reporters and insisted that he'll return to action at some point this season. The Royals' Chris Getz was one possible trade target for the Phillies but it's unlikely that he'll be dealt as he has a good chance at opening the season as Kansas City's starting second baseman.

That's not what I read but it is good enough. I guess getting a non starter would be ideal in the event Utley comes back. Worth would seem to be a good fit. I am not enamored with Blanton but at least you know what you are getting even if it is 10 mil. Worth has been real good defensively from what I have seen when I was in Florida and have been reading lately.

Phillies want to reduce payroll and have offered Blanton - his 8.5M contract remaining.
You can bet the Tigers won't go there. Gotta' believe our team payroll is maxed out for April and May at-least.

Also hard to believe Dombrowski will move Worth, being Santiago is no spring chicken anymore and moving Worth leaves a play-anywhere depth hole, should Ramon get injured.

What's nice about our team is the abundance of depth -- everywhere except the catcher position. Avila needs to stay relatively healthy and avoid any 60 day DL-stints.

Tigers will likely roll with Below, Smyly, Oliver and Turner at the #5 rotation spot all season.

Most teams have little catcher depth. You get a good one and pray he stays healthy.

Depends how much of that they (Phillies) are willing to pickup.

Is there something I'm missing with Worth to think he'd be scouted?

I still don't see any Tigers interest in Blanton.
This is not the same Joe Blanton from 2009. Blanton was offered around MLB last November and December. No takers. He's probably in the same boat as Inge.... borderline DFA in the next week.

I don't care if Blanton was free, at this point, he isn't viable. Anyone of Below, Smyly or Oliver could give you the same production as Blanton. Keep in mind Blanton was injured most of last year. Add to the fact I find Worth more valuable.

Now, if it meant Brandon was part of the deal. I would jump in a heartbeat.

"Okay we'll trade you Danny but you have to take Brandon as well" -- DD

"Hold it a minute, just a minute. You can have Blanton, we'll pay his contract and you can keep Worth" -- Philly's GM.

Ignoring the fact that ChucKy ChecKswing is a 5-10 guy, I doubt that even a semi-pro baseball team could be swayed into trading with the Tigers for a package deal that included him.

Including the Tigers eating his contact, to boot. In fact, should ChucKy be given the D-Finger-A ziggy again, I would be very surprised if any MLB team would be willing to snatch him up, unless all of their regular and backup 3B and 2B-men were killed in a freak accident or they were all DLed for most or all of the entire regular season.

That posted, and I might be all wrong, but with Miggy's face recently being mauled by that bad-hop baseball, I think the Tigers might now be more injury-skittish, and as a result, inclined to retain ChucKy on the roster, at least for the first month or two of the upcoming season.

I doubt Miguel's injury will play any role in Inge. We have more capable players than Inge that could play 3rd.

I guess you are missing my point. Blanton holds as much trade value as Brandon. They are both due to make a ton of money without the relative production. So, trading Brandon for Blanton actually make sense for both teams.

We could use Blanton, I doubt Philly has any need for Inge. Not sure how its good sense for both.

So why hasn't he been dumped already?

He hasn't exactly lit up many if any of the pitchers that he has faced so far in ST while at the plate, even those scrubs who obviously had zero chance of making their team's roster.

Philly needs someone to back up 2B and 3B. Hence why they were seen scouting Worth and Pena (NYY).

Actually, they could move Polanco back to 2B and put Inge at third.

How bad off is Philly for Brandon Inge to become an option? Holy shit.

Phillie is in a pickle for sure. I think Blanton is as solid as say Penny. It may be worth it (no pun intended) to give the young guys a little more seasoning. Oliver has the stuff but he can't seem to consistently throw strikes. I am not opposed to waiting this out and do a 5th by committee but you always run the risk in damaging a young mans confidence.
