DD telling it like it is.. Have to like that.. he has to lament the fact that if he wins those 2 WS we played terrible in he would have gone down in Tiger lore...

Is it really a mixed signal? Mr. I decided it was time for a change after spending a gazillion dollars, twice missing a championship by getting crushed by inferior teams in the W.S., and fighting tooth and nail not to become sellers this season. As Avila said, the decision to sell was made very late, almost last minute. Mr. I probably felt leveraged by the timing of it after making it clear that he wanted the team to be buyers and to compete this year. Dombrowski probably made the best decision for the period beyond the remainder of 2015, time will tell, but that clearly didn't sit well with Mr. I who obviously viewed it as a difference in philosophy and approach to make his "win now" team a seller.

I think the handling of everything was pretty poor, but this should be a good thing for Dombrowski, good for Avila, and hopefully it is enough to push the Tigers to the next level. The latter seems least likely, but so much depends on the prospects we traded for panning out, our stars getting healthy and rebounding, and the offseason signings. If we sign Greinke and Cespedes, for example, a few of the young pitchers pan out to fill a rotation and a bullpen spot or two, and JV/Anibal/VMart put up numbers closer to their career averages, we're right in the hunt for the division. On the flip side, it could all go south in a hurry if one or two of those things don't happen.

The real cause for concern after Dave Dombrowski's firing by the Tigers. A Must Read.
from bybtb

Honestly I'm wondering if Mike I has Alzheimers or some other serious memory problems.

I don't see DD just saying "well screw the old man, I'm going to do what I want". I have no doubt that DD was told (and rightly so) that we should be sellers and attempt to get something for our departing FA's. Now whether Mike I was lucid when he was advised about what moves they should make is a real question to me.

I'm not sure he has Alzheimer's regardless how he looks but he seems to want to win so bad that he doesn't want common sense. And it was common sense to trade the 3 players. I'm worried that as early as next season he'll just trade his new young prospects for older vets and we'll have the same problem 2 years from now..

If MI did want to buy or DD went against him, something would have been said after trading Price and before Cespedes.

Mr. I was supposedly in attendance on Sunday for the bullpen (Krol) meltdown loss. I don't think Ausmus is long for managing here.

Avila bringing new look to Tigers' front office.

Front offices started realizing, for example, a player who hits .180 has some value should his on-base percentage be .360.

The numbers go deeper than that, and aren't just used for player evaluation, but for game preparation, as well.

It was telling, then, one of Avila's first moves as general manager was to promote 20-something Sam Menzin from analytics coordinator to director of baseball operations. Menzin also soon will be given the green light to hire two analytics experts.

"We will expand little by little," Avila said. "There are certain areas that we've been missing out on. Sam is preparing those conversations. Preparing for next year, in the offseason, the pursuit of free agents, possible trades."

Avila said expanded analytics also will help in the draft.

Hopefully they carry through.

Given the right money, I would move to Detroit.
