10 GM Candidates To Watch

And I think many fans will view White as Mayhew 2.0, a black guy promoted from within possibly either to try and appease the PC side or because they prefer to go with promoting a guy from within instead of having someone come in from outside.

If he is one of the top 3 GM prospects, hard to disagree with them keeping him; however, the taint is so strong right now that it is extremely difficult to imagine a guy with the organization for 19 seasons with far more losses than wins is someone who should be put in charge. Sure, those losses are not specifically his responsibility, but he has been in that culture of losing so long that it has to crept into him. If he wanted to be a winner, seems like he would have submitted a resume to a winning organization at some point. But maybe he is just a really big Lions fan lucky enough to be a potential GM???

Don't want him. One thing though about him being an interim is that once new GM is found not just the interim fired, him, but he won't be back at previous job title.

I don't see the 2nd half of the season being of any help to White though, unless he fires Caldwell after another loss or two. Caldwell has completely lost the locker room, and White needs to recognize that. If he tells Martha this fact, pointing out that Caldwell quit on the team and therefore the team has quit on him, she might demand Caldwell be fired immediately...but there is little benefit to come from that in reality. They can assign another coach as Interim, but the team will still lose...so I still say let those losses be on Caldwell's resume because that guy should never coach again. Let the rest of the league look at how he turned an 11-5 team into a 1-15 team and try to give him the benefit of the doubt. I don't think even another 1-15 team would see him as a valid candidate to improve their team. He just flat out sucks as a head coach.

At this point even though he's the GM, I believe it is limited. Meaning he can't fire the HC.

Who knows his reasons for sticking around. Some people want to settle in and, working for an organization as overly loyal as this one, who could blame him? Plus it's not like your new job is a few more or less miles away, you'd have to uproot and move to a whole new city. I can see the appeal of sticking with one team.

Like everything else about White, hard to know for sure. All I know is that a beat writer who interacts with football people says he's highly respected, he's recommended by the FPA, and of all the people they cleaned out yesterday they decided to keep him around in the interim.

Keeping him around is probably just because they couldn't fire everyone halfway through the season. After White I wonder who would have been next in line as GM.

Well, Martha might beat him to the punch regardless. Team has quit on him so Caldwell won't be able to point to any wins that will save his worthless ass. Lions will be lucky to stay within 10 points in any of their remaining games, including SF, because the players literally do not want Caldwell to have another victory. Sure they might get released, but they can tryout for another team whereas Caldwell is done. Players right now just should focus on getting their paycheck and not sustain a career ending injury.

I don't know. I don't really understand or maybe I don't believe players quitting on coaches. They obviously don't have any fight.. The KC game in particular. But I would think players always have something to play for.. Future job. Plus, I haven't seen anything that says players are unhappy with Caldwell.

Maybe they haven't quit. Maybe Caldwell is more like Hoke than I ever imagined. If the players actually do like him but cannot seem to perform well, that typically is a symptom of coaches not being able to coach up talent. Take Laken for example. Dude seems confused and lost, footwork is a mess. That is on coaching. Whether it was that Lombardi tried to be too cute with his plays or whatnot, I don't know...but I honestly believe if Laken was coached up on technique he would improve similar to how Jim H has coached up the UM OL talent by improving their technique. Caldwell & Co. do not come across as guys who focus on technique, instead just drawing up plays and telling the guys to execute. That doesn't work. Even the best players need to be continually working on and coached up on technique.

Hell, I love CJ, but it seems even his technique has declined since Caldwell came on board. Some coaches ignore fundamentals and technique, Lions need a coach who understands those to be the foundations upon which the team will win championships.

Caldwell looks like that boss that the employees just walk over. The kind of boss where there is no accountability and the employees just show up, kind of do what they want and just collect a paycheck.

As far as CJ's technique declining...I really doubt that his technique has declined...he is hitting that age where WRs physical ability declines...especially the larger WRs.

Ive seen 4 lists which show 4 different packer people names. Which means these lists are BS.

Packers have definitely benefitted from playing Vikes, Bears, and Lions. To their credit they have drafted well and kept picks, but I do question the relative greatness of the Packers when they are given 5 or 6 wins every year just by being in this division.

Packers are 47-29 (.618) outside the division in the Rodgers era (which includes an awful 2-8 his first year)... I'd say that's pretty good, especially considering they're scheduled against 2 other top NFC teams nearly every season.

Wasn't saying they are not a good team, just questioning their status of being one of the greatest. Granted the Pats have been similarly blessed, but the Pats have had far more post-season success.

Give me Will McClay from the Cowboys. If he was able to get crazy Jerry to draft the talent the Cowboys have gotten through the draft then that's my guy.

Zach Martin over Johnny Football when Jerry Was drooling over him was legendary.

DeCosta (never will leave Baltimore), Casiero (extended through 2020) will be tough gets. Omar Khan would be good.

I agree on premise, but I can't bring myself to believe JERRUH ever drafted anyone except the guy JERRUH wanted. If he didn't draft Manziel, it's because he didn't want him the way the media said he did.
