2016 NFL DRAFT: PICK-BY-PICK GRADES AND ANALYSIS OF ROUND 1
Senior analyst Steve Palazzolo breaks down and grades every first-round selection.

16. Detroit Lions: Taylor Decker | Grade: D+
Decker is not among the elite tackles in this draft as he does his best work in the running game, but he’s questionable in pass protection. He finished with the No. 22 overall grade in the draft class, but more importantly, his +1.6 pass blocking grade ranked 37th and it’s cause for concern for a first-round offensive tackle. He certainly has the frame and length to develop, but it’s a huge risk in the middle of the first round for a player we saw as more of a late second-round prospect. As a power run blocker, Decker is strong, creating movement at the point of attack and fitting well into a power scheme. Ultimately, he has to make major strides in pass protection to warrant the first-round selection.

Shaq Lawson
William Jackson III
Myles Jack
Ryan Kelley

We had plenty of chances to get #16 right. We pulled a Rob Deer (swing and a miss)

Jack is a mess. I knew they wouldn't take a C. Wouldn't mind a CB but knew nothing about WJ III.

This is what I posted in March...looks an awful lot like me and PFF agree almost exactly...

My Analysis:

I watched the two videos above and a few more from this year and last. Honestly I'll be surprised if this guy goes in the first round. He plays with a wide base but his feet are slow, watch him move side to side and watch how defenders in the run and pass game slip by him. His anchor is so-so but he plays tall and his lack of upper body strength kills him. Defenders easily disengage in both the run and pass game. You should always see an olineman's arms when he's blocking. You don't see Deckers ever. He is good in the run game when he stays low and fires off directly at a target rather than sifting. He would fit best in a power blocking scheme, but again he needs to improve his upper body strength. I can't see enough pass footage on Decker to make a good judgement because of the Buckeye offense. I fear he will have trouble protecting a 7 step drop in the NFL.

Oh I agree but maybe he is not all that good TD.. I don't follow draft crap like others and while I applaud going after line if he is the 4th best you need to work a deal and move up. Or down and get more picks.

Perhaps...fair enough..

I don't follow all the draft hype that closely either, just perfectly ok with it that o line has been such a dumpster fire for so long it's just refreshing to see the new leadership not take a tight end or injury prone hopeful high upside guy in the first round, decker paved roads for Elliot, running game just got a little better ;-)

From WalterFootball.com:

Detroit Lions: Taylor Decker, OT, Ohio State B Grade
Taylor Decker was projected to go in the 14-20 range, so this makes sense as far as that is concerned. He's also a good fit in terms of need. The Lions' pass protection was an abomination at times last year. They needed a left tackle, but weren't going to get that here at No. 16. The right tackle spot had to be addressed as well, however, and the Lions will be better at that spot with Decker. This deserves a solid "B" grade.

Might just have to just go ahead and call it an upton now over deer..lol 42% k rate this year or something dumb

He is not that bad. He will be a starter for ten years. We need to run the f9tball to open up the pass game. Solid pick.

I'd trade up to take tunsil at this point....might cost a 4th?

Seriously can we just hire Hughes as our GM? It's not that much of a stretch. We already have that guy who sits in the little booth at the front of the Ford's Florida gated community at President.

He would spend all day on this board griping about how stupid he is.
