2017 spring football practice updates

For me this hasn't changed how i think or feel about Speight one bit. Would have been better if he didn't struggle, but there are way too many variables in play to read much into it.

What did move the needle is how good Peters' physical tools are. I think there's a real chance that he could overtake Speight or at the least push him to be a better qb. This sure does have to be a wake up call for Wilton.

coworker of mine said he thinks Speight was hurt, but I haven't read anything about that or even any speculation to that effect. I still haven't watched the spring game, but damn... he looked THAT bad?

Yep. He was terrible. 9-26 for 78 yards and two picks. One a 101 yard pick six that was an absolutely horrible throw. The other pick was also a terrible decision. Highlights.

Yeah, I haven't heard anything about lingering injuries either. Aside from showing the escapability that we've seen (and some of that was suspect, since they weren't hitting qb's) he didn't really do anything well. Mentally looked completely out of sync, made some terrible decisions, and his throws were greatly affected by the wind while Peters just zipped them right on through.

Of course he's working with a near completely new set of receivers and it's not like they've even completed a full spring session yet. A sluggish struggle wasn't that unexpected, but the contrast between the two was pretty jarring.

Speaking of zipping through the wind, Nordin's 48 yard field goal was ridiculous. It hit very top of the net. Just exploded off his foot.

I thought about the latter thing (new receivers & different personnel in general affecting Speight negatively) but I don't see how the same issues wouldnt affect Peters negatively as well.

In theory they've both had as much off-season time to work with the new receiving corps (ie not much)

I'm not a guy who bags on college kids for mistakes or poor performance, and I would be disappointed in a way if Speight regresses or loses the starting job, but I have to admit after some of the crappy throws and the mistakes late in the season (esp the pick six & goal line fumble against OSU) I wouldnt be THAT disappointed if Peters turns out to be better.

If you're looking to do a strict comparison between the two and draw conclusions from it, there's no doubt, Peters had the upper hand in nearly every area. I just think it's wise not to jump the gun too much. But I'm in the same boat. Speight did enough to earn my respect and cause me to pull for him, but he left enough on the table where I'd have no problem getting behind the idea of Peters taking over.

As long as Harbaugh is successful at managing it, this is actually a pretty good scenario. Experienced upper class-man who rises to the challenge and elevates his game, or ultra talented 2nd year guy who's built for this system and beats out a 10 game winner. There's a doomsday scenario in there too of course, but I feel pretty good about the competitive culture of the program and think cream will rise to the top.
 
Just rewatched the Peters int and Nick Eubanks stops his route and doesnt do anything to prevent the interception. It was actually a nice play if Eubanks doesnt shit his pants and stop, once he sees the corner coming his way. It should have been a bang bang play. Eubanks catching the ball and getting hit immediately.

Just an observation and not a cheerleader-ish excuse making observation.
 
Speight isnt hurt. Remember when he hurt his throwing arm in high school? They said his velocity was gone after coming back. What we see and what we have been seeing is Wilton Speight. I said in the beginning of the year that his velocity caused bad timing and it would cost us the OSU game, if it continued. It did. We lost.

I would rather Peters start against Florida(possibly win) and lose, then get his shit together over the next couple games, than have Speight for the whole year and have his arm cost us against good teams.

what I'm hearing is: "If Harbaugh doesn't start Peters, I'm going to bitch about Speight all season long -win or lose - and complain that Harbaugh is too loyal to his guys. My bitching and complaining is going to drive you nuts. I'm letting you know now so you can prepare yourselves."
 
Eh, he'll play the best QB. But, it's just pretty clear that the dude has maxed out his talent. I don't think he's going to suddenly find some extra velocity on his ball unless he completely overhauls his mechanics.

He's a good leader, pretty shifty in the pocket and generally makes decent decisions. But with a young team that's going to need someone to potentially grab the bull and take over, I don't think Speight's the guy to do that.

His lack of velocity wouldn't be as bad if he was really accurate. Unfortunately, he's not accurate. He doesn't hit WRs in stride very often and we really can't have a downfield passing game with him as our QB. Passing game is always going to be limited with Speight at QB.
 
I think it's going to take a heroic effort for Peters to earn the spot in 2017 over the summer. Harbaugh has said Speight could be the best QB in the entire nation. You didn't hear those comments last year. He thinks super highly of Wilton.

40th in passer rating, 61st in yards, 58th in TDs, 25th in INTs, 41st in YPA. All that coupled with -60 rushing yards. Sure sounds like the best QB in the nation. Jim may have been channeling Fred Jackson with that comment.

I still agree it's going to take a heroic effort by Peters.

Hey, you don't have to sell me. I was never fully invested in him as a star, even when he was putting up the solid numbers until Week 8-9ish. That team was 99 percent defense, 1 percent "Don't screw things up Wilton."

When he was put in the big moments, he sucked. And he played a lot of that game against Iowa just fine. He wasn't ready.

I didnt know there was any bitching in my statement. Just my opinion with fact. Brandon Peters will be a RS Freshman this year and is the most talented qb we've had since Chad Henne. This is about OSU and future playoff appearances, nothing else. If the mantra is best guy plays, lets stick with it and not bullshit the fans. The thing is is that we saw Peters in the Spring game last year and the Army All-American game and came away impressed. He's got IT. This past spring game just solidified what most were already thinking.

Speight is an alright qb that will win us some games. I AM not confident he will get us to the next level. He makes most of the right decisions, but a lot of them are late decisions........ with a very late ball. Believe me, I am not wishing for his failure. But our starting qb should not look like our worst qb in a friggin spring game.
