2018 MLB Draft Casey Mize # 1 Draft Pick

Casey Mize completed a bullpen session today and will throw another on Friday in his rehab process, according to Tigers medical update. If all goes well, he'll then begin his normal offseason strength and conditioning workouts.

Let the speculation begin.

Last week was the deadline for MLB teams to exchange arbitration numbers with their eligible players. And the Detroit Tigers finalized contracts with 3 out of 4 players.

All except for Casey Mize.

Remember him? The #1 draft pick back in 2018 who has only pitched 1 full season and a handful of games over an additional 2 years.

Mize last pitched almost 2 years ago. A lifetime in baseball.

They are going to arbitration over a difference in salary. The Tigers offered $815,000. Mize wants $840,000.

A difference of $25,000.

But don?t think that this is an instance of the Tigers being cheap. Don?t make that automatic assumption.

The Tigers are anything but cheap under the post-Covid, post-tear down and new leadership.

Fans don?t see it but Chris Ilitch has poured millions into the franchise?s infrastructure. The first owner to do such dating back to before we were born. Expanding departments, buying tons of new expensive technology and hiring the best executives, managers, coaches and specialists.

He?s even green-lighted huge expansions of personnel in multiple departments like player development, analytics, scouting and drafting. He is also funding the increase from 5 coaches to 11.

Ilitch hired both a President of Baseball Operations and a GM. He didn?t have to. An extra person and an extra multi-million dollar salary.

So it doesn?t make sense that the team would balk at a measly extra $25,000.

There is something else going on. And it?s why the Tigers are making a statement by staying put in their salary offer.

Let?s explore what possibly could be going on.

SATURDAY SURVEY.

Casey Mize last pitched for the Detroit Tigers in early 2022. He threw only 10 innings that April before being shut down and having Tommy John surgery in June. Recently, it was revealed that he also had back surgery from a long-standing issue at some point after his TJ surgery. The date of that surgery has not been released. It is believed to have also been in 2022.

Mize missed almost the entire 2022 season and all of 2023. It will be 2 years since he last pitched should he return to the rotation.

He came back to Detroit in late August of last year to throw live batting practice. He lasted only for 15 pitches before being shut down again with fatigue.

He did not pitch again for weeks and in November it was announced that he was back to his throwing program. Yet, he is still suffering from arm fatigue. The Tigers are being very cautious and keeping him at a lower pace in his throwing program.

The average pitcher requires 12-18 months post-TJ for recovery with a full return closer to the 18 months. It will be 20 months for Mize should he return and throw in spring training.

Mize was the #1 overall draft pick back in 2018. In his career for the Tigers, he has thrown only 1 full season out of 3 (1 was only 1/3rd of a season).?That was back in 2021.

What do you think about Casey Mize?s future? Can he return after 2 major surgeries and significant time away?

Will Casey Mize return and remain in the Tigers' starting rotation?

1. Yes, he'll be fine.

2. Yes, but it's going to take awhile.

3. It doesn't look promising.

4. No, the odds don't favor him.

This Is where I know she's absolutely ridiculous.

Detroit flipped Maybin and Miller for Miggy. That's a huge W. Ryan Perry was so so but not terrible. Jacob Turner was also flipped for Anibel Sanchez AND Omar Infante. Huge.

Rick Porcello won a fucking CY Young lol.

Nick Castellanos was obviously a great pick.

Ruffin and Hamilton were both busts. Crawford was a 22nd pick but was also dealt (somehow she misses all this in her analysis.)

Hill, Burrows and Stewart were all not good picks...but again we are talking late round not top 10.

Then we get to Greene (good pick) Mize good pick it not for injuries. Manning good pick. Faedo...not great but still on club. If Tork gets off his snide he has an above average trajectory easily.

Like I've said before...she is way too pessimistic for my taste. Not even being remotely objective in analysis

I mean come on man...you're just going to fly over the fact Maybin and Miller were traded for one of the best players in Tigers history? Imagine the fleecing had Dontrelle Willis not fallen apart. They got the Marlins best pitcher as well.

This is where KC tees up a good topic and the board goes pffffffffffffffffffffffft.

Detroit Tigers may have another triple crown winner in their midst.
Hitters dominate when it comes to the star players in the MLB, but pitchers deserve credit where credit is due, and the Detroit Tigers have one of the best.
