2023 NFL Draft

There is zero chance the Lions take a QB at all with their first pick IMO. I just don't see it happening. Nor should it.

I am now on the Jalen Carter bandwagon with the Rams pick and Noah Sewell or Trenton Simpson with our pick. I think Carter and a stud LB could transform our defense to a top tier defense.

DE Hutch, Houston
DT Alim, Carter
LB Rodrigo, Sewell, AA or Barnes
CB Okudah, Jacobs
S Walker, Joseph

Damn good starting line up

Houston?? No. He would get destroyed in the running game. He's 240 lbs. He's a speed edge rusher with a really quick get off.

You don't want that guys in there a lot unless its a clear passing situation.

I like Sewell but have read mixed reviews on his ability to cover. Seems like a 2 down MLB and a 1st round pick is too high for those in 2022. We need an athletic LB who is solid against the run but excels against the pass. Hard to find? Yes. Sewell reminds me a LOT of Jelani Tavai. Not just in physical stature.....but in ability as well.

LB's have become a specialized unit. Yes, there are still the rare guys who are both good against the run and pass.....but they are few and far between. Now, you need a LB room that has guys that specialize in certain aspects of the game. Run defender, blitzer, zone defender and man defender. Unless Sewell fits ALL of those....i'd pass and use a 1st on a CB, DE or S.

That seems like a great plan. I just pulled up a mock draft and they had Porter and Johnson both going in the top 15 picks.

I've seen numerous mocks that have Johnson in the top of the 2nd. As low as 43rd. As high as 15.

Maybe I was just wishful thinking. But he seems like a guy who would fit REALLY well in this system. Big bodied DB who can cover WR's, TE's or RB's like a cover corner, but big enough to play well against the run. He's a 3 down player who instantly improves our cover man scheme.

Any really good DB would fit well in this system...since they have so very few of them ;)

Joseph Walker Okudah Jacobs are all good DBs I would say.

Elliot and Harris at nickel seem solid enough too lately.

But always great to have more and they will with AO, Hughes, Elliot and Harris FAs and Walker coming off major injury.

I would like to see Hughes back. He has played pretty good. He got beat up by JJ last week.....but so does everyone so.....

Okudah, Round 1 Rookie, Hughes, Jacobs, Harris at CB
Joseph, Walker, 2nd round rookie at S

I would take any one of the players listed above happily. Even if we did draft Jalen Carter, getting a stud DT and having the best 3 man DT rotation in the NFL would be nice.

Then the LB's would get more space to make plays and the DB's wouldn't have to cover for 5 seconds every time we DON'T blitz.

We may be forced into taking a qb like Stroud at 4 if den and chi are picking 2 and 3 and we can't find a trade partner. Real possibility Anderson and Carter are gone.

There's like 3 or 4 corners that are projected top 20. I love the idea of taking one of them with our pick.

Don't forget TE!... and this guy might actually be worth it in the middle of rd1.

well, if those two are gone and Stroud is sitting there, the Lions could have a few options.

Right now the teams behind the #4 pick that are likely to be in the market for a QB

7 Indy
9 Carolina

I?m one of the few that likes the idea of taking a QB early. Goff is currently playing well but has been inconsistent since joining the Lions. He?s had good games at home this year but he?s been a different QB on the road. Getting a QB on a rookie deal the next 4-5 years would open up an additional $20-30mil in cap space each season. I know there?s very few in the world but I want a QB that has the ?it? factor and can go out win games and put together last minute game winning TD drives.

Definitely wouldn?t be opposed to Anderson or Carter but I personally would value QB higher.

100% NO on a tight end in the first!

weren't you the one that wanted the Lions to take Malik Willis with their first pick last year? ;)

Lol yes that was me. In my defense, nobody thought he would drop into the 3rd. We all look at mocks to get an idea and figure out what we like. Willis was mocked in the top 5 in most.

I know...I was just f'ing with you!

I think Holmes can add good players and be a contender with Goff with two 1st rounders on potential position players. Then in 2024 draft reassess too. This is the don't shoot for the stars approach but still can win.

I think Holmes can add a rookie QB in Round 1, keep Goff one or two years too and add good players to be a contender. Don't reach for a bad QB is the key and still plenty of other picks and FA to build and continue to develop the roster. This is a good scenario because the backup QB situation doesn't end our season with a Goff injury too. This is the safest approach I would think but you give up a 1st rounder on a positional player. Which is not ideal but doesn't make or break adding talent with all the other picks FAs. Less money in FA but still plenty of money in FA in 2023 even with keeping Goff. And could also restructure Goff too and kick the can a year or two with void year.

Adding a rookie and dumping Goff and that rookie is a bad QB bust is the worst-case scenario. If that rookie is amazing though and better than Goff it's best case scenario with all that cap space. However, if the rookie gets hurt with no viable backup then back to worst case scenario. So it's really boom or bust doing it this way.

So, what you're saying is.....

Good rookies are good to have.

Bad rookies are bad.

Good rookies that get hurt are also bad.

Hold on........taking notes......don't want to forget this.........OK. Got it. Thank you.

It wouldn't be adding a QB that would bother me. It would bother me if we waste good draft capital to bring in a player that cannot help immediately when we could use that pick on a player that can.
