SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

The 2025 season is about to start and the Tigers have a lot of new faces in spring training. But how many of them will be making the roster? And will they all make a difference during the season?

Scott Harris acquired a lot of new players, signing most of them to minor league contracts. Those earning MLB paychecks are:
Alex Cobb (SP) – currently on IL
Jack Flaherty (SP)
Tommy Kahnle (RP)
Gleyber Torres (2B)

Of note are the following 2 players, signed to minor league contracts with invites to spring training. Neither is on the 40-man roster.
Andrew Chafin (RP)
Jahmai Jones (OF)

The Tigers also pursued Alex Bregman but lost out to the Red Sox. They were also linked to Pete Alonso but he returned to the Mets. And it was disclosed that they were interested in Anthony Santander but did not offer him a contract.

How well did Scott Harris do? What grade would you give him for player acquisitions over the winter?
What grade would you give Scott Harris for his off-season work?

I voted D. Cobb wanted to retire and Harris signed him really early in the process. No reason for that. I think that the Torres signing was stupid.

Final line for Tigers starter Jackson Jobe: 3.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 1 K. 50 pitches, 31 strikes.Generated 4 whiffs on 25 swings for 16% whiff rate. Fastball averaged 97.8 mph. Struck out Vladimir Guerrero Jr. swinging with a fastball. Ended start with back-to-back walks.
Awesome outing from Jobe .. does walk the last two ..Santander somehow stayed alive fouling off 2-2 99.2 then walks and Springer takes 3 straight FB all tail arm side very close all balls then walks .. but just tremendous stuff from Jackson Jobe.
just missed whiffing Santander got squeezed on two calls to Springer on the last walk.. blew away Vlad .. fun to watch.

Tigers signed RHP Jose Urquidy to a one-year, $1 million contract with a $4 million club option for 2026. Urquidy missed all of last season and had Tommy John surgery on June 5. He will begin on the 60-day IL with the Tigers.

By signing Uriquidy to a major league deal..they will need to place somebody either on the 60 day DL or cut somebody from the 40..Uriquidy wil lthen be placed on the 60 day DL creating a 40 spot..
Tyler Mattison and SGL both likely 60 day DL guys..that will be the move for Uriquidy.
Urquidy is 29 years old and had an elite changeup in 2023. Career ERA under 4.00 but struggled in his injury riddled 23 and 24 seasonsHe had TJ in June of 24. Tigers sign him to a “major league deal” and will put him on the IL, but could be a nice add to the pen later this season.

The Tigers have placed José Urquidy and Sawyer Gipson-Long on the 60-day injured list. The 40-man roster is at 39 players.

We have signed RHP José Urquidy to a one-year, $1,000,000 contract for the 2025 season with a $4,000,000 club option for the 2026 campaign. The 2026 club option contains performance bonuses as follows: $150,000 each for reaching four and seven games started as a pitcher; $300,000 each for reaching 10, 13, 16 and 19 games started as a pitcher; and $500,000 each for reaching 22, 25 and 28 games started as a pitcher. To make room for Urquidy on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Sawyer Gipson-Long was placed on the 60-day injured list as he continues to rehab his left hip labral repair and Tommy John ligament replacement surgery. Urquidy was also placed on the 60-day injured list as he continues his recovery from Tommy John ligament replacement surgery. Detroit’s 40-man roster stands at 39 players.Urquidy, 29, has gone 27-16 with one save and a 3.98 ERA (179 ER/405.0 IP) in 79 career major league appearances (70 starts) covering parts of five seasons with the Houston Astros (2019-23). He has pitched in the postseason in every season of his big league career, including three World Series, and has gone 4-2 with a 4.08 ERA (21 ER/46.1 IP) in 15 playoff outings, including eight starts. The righthander broke into the big leagues in 2019 and made only 14 big league regular season outings (12 starts) his first two seasons before enjoying a breakout campaign in 2021, going 8-3 with a 3.62 ERA (43 ER/107.0 IP) in 20 starts, and became the first Mexican-born pitcher to earn multiple World Series wins that October. In 2022, Urquidy set career bests in several categories, going 13-8 with a 3.94 ERA (72 ER/164.1 IP) in 29 appearances (28 starts), again pitching in the World Series and helping the Astros to a championship.Urquidy was limited to only 16 outings, 10 as a starter, in 2023 due to a right shoulder injury and missed the entire 2024 campaign after being placed on the injured list in spring training with a right forearm strain and undergoing right elbow surgery on June 5.Born in Mazatlan, Mexico, Urquidy was originally signed by the Astros as a non-drafted free agent in 2015.
