2025 Tigers Spring Training

3rd best on a team that didn't hit well? I'm not sure that's a ringing endorsement. Top picks who went to college for 3 years get rushed all the time. The mistake was that he missed development during covid when the minor leagues were shut down. 1B should hit better..

You shouldn't want a guy just because he was slightly above average on a team full of below average hitters. He was good in August, 14 games. Afterward in 28 games his numbers were .210 .319 .677.
Well 1 of those below average hitters was the guy you're ok with replacing him.

This is the B-R projection for Torkelson in 2025.

459 PA, 16 HR, 52 RBI. 112 K, 42 BB.

AVG .230, OBP .307, SLG .406, OPS .713.

He was the first player picked in the 2020 draft. And he's 25, so that's an issue, too. I think he gets traded before the deadline to avoid arbitration if these are going to be his approximate numbers.

Unless they think these changes he's made are finally unlocking him. He's looked as good as he's ever looked this spring. Seems like he was fighting against making changes after his 30 home run season. It's not crazy to think he'll still be a .800 ops type player

It is crazy. Even when he hit 31 home runs he wasn't close to an .800 OPS.

Hope that happens, obviously. His new approach of "hitting over the second baseman's" head in interesting in that Fangraphs expects him to pull 60% of balls he puts in play this season.

His last 129 games in 2023 his ops was exactly .800. He just had a brutal first month. That's an extremely large sample size. That's 5 months of really good hitting and 1 month of trash. He hasn't always been bad like you make it out.

Also, his ops was .781 when he came back the last 2 months last season. So basically he's had an .800 ops for most of the last 2 seasons. Just 1 horrible month in 2023 and 2 horrible months last year. 7 above average months and 3 terrible isnt so bad for a young player in age 23-24 seasons.

I love fangraphs, but they don't take into consideration swing changes. Ive given up on him every living up to that 1.1 status. I just feel like there's still a really good hitter in there and would hate to cast him aside. Especially when we still have turds on this roster that can't hit for shit and keep spots solely because they can play half ass defense at multiple spots.

He had a good 14 games in August. Don't overlook the terrible 28 in Sept./Oct. But you did bring up one good point he's inconsistent as fk.

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

The Detroit Tigers’ first game of the 2025 season is set for 6 days from now when they take on the LA Dodgers.
The final Opening Day roster has yet to be finalized however, concerns – as with any team – are already being identified.
Given that it is Friday, what are the 5 biggest challenges this team must address?

I voted infield defense. What Harris and Hinch are doing is mind boggling.
