2025 Tigers Spring Training

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

Don’t look now but Spencer Torkelson is experiencing a re-birth. During spring training, he has more HRs and total bases than any other player. He also has 1 of the team’s best slash lines.
To his credit, he went from a negative defender to achieving a +2 DRS last year. However, he was still moved off 1B to give way to Colt Keith who is signed to a 6-9 year contract.
Tork is expected to play the occasional 1B and DH. He is also experimenting with the OF although early observations aren’t good.

A. J. Hinch said that anyone who hits will have a place on this roster. Especially important when this team ranks in the lower third of MLB offensively.
It is appearing more and more likely that Torkelson will be named to the Opening Day roster as a bench player.

Spencer has admitted that he did a lot of growing up and sees things differently now. He is now 25 years old and lost a year of service time due to being sent down to Toledo.
In all fairness, he was promoted to Detroit after only 1 year in the minors. He clearly wasn’t ready for Detroit back then when the player development system was poor and the former Front Office was desperate.
Tork is making $800,000 and will become a free agent after the 2028 season. His agent is Scott Boras.

What should the Tigers do with Torkelson given his current limited role with the team?
Today’s blog addresses this question and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!
For this one blog only, you’ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts. Of course, you can also respond to other readers.
TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.
Ready?

What should the Tigers do with Spencer Torkelson this year?

1. If he hits, keep him.

2. Build up his value and trade him this year.

3. Trade him this winter when deals tend to be better.

Manuel Margot's MLB contract with the Tigers is for one year, $1.3 million (with $1.2 million in bonuses for plate appearances).
The Tigers are signing center fielder Manuel Margot to MLB contract. The deal is pending physical.

This is the general outline of the platoons for now. Obviously, lots of room for flexibility. There are plenty of ways to get Keith or Greene time at DH. Hopefully Carpenter gets some occasional looks against lefties.
It's the splits against left-handers that best explains the Tigers' reported (Ken Rosenthal) signing of outfielder Manuel Margot. In those nine MLB seasons against left-handed pitching, Margot is .279/.338/.415/.753.
Manuel Margot is joining the Tigers tonight in San Francisco ahead of their two exhibition games, per source. Expect him to be active for Opening Day against the Dodgers.

Greene, Carpenter, Meadows and Keith should not be experimenting at different defensive positions."
