8 team playoff being discussed

More teams are always great until you have the same problem - some teams will miss out thinking they deserve to get in. Plus more 2 loss teams and maybe a 3 loss team. Maybe they can play into February. I would hate this. What's to stop them from a 16 team playoff?

FCS does a 24 team playoff without a problem. They started their playoff on 11/24/18 and are done by 1/5/19. That includes the semi-finals being played on 12/15/18, so there's a large break between the semis and the championship.

Anyone ranked #9 bitching about being left out should be reminded that at one time finishing #1 in the polls was all that mattered and aside from possible scenarios and what if’s, there’s not a single #9 or #10 of memory that would warrant expansion.

4 is debatable and 8 solves the need. CFB is beginning to become watered down as it is - noter dame has its bullshit loopholes and most conferences are incredibly unbalanced. Top 8 solves that when the B10 East or SEC West is 3-4 deep in program talent and more than one team deserves the shot.

Another possibility is going to 6, then the top 2 get byes. That could allow for just about anyone who has a real case getting in. Whereas I find it a little harder most of the time for the #8 team to really have a good case. It also adds some incentive for staying in the top 2 (say if for instance this year Bama had lost to Georgia, they probably would have still gotten in as the #3 or #4 seed, so no real harm for them in the current setup).
It hasn't happened most years, but if it just so happens that every Power 5 conference has a strong champion, then they'd all be represented. Then it also leaves room for a strong runner-up or non Power 5 to sneak in.

Then part of me says if you go to 6, you might as well go to 8. There is no perfect solution really. I used to like the idea of the more the better and also loved the idea of in March Madness it all being settled on the field/court. Then I watched an NCAA Championship game that featured a 7 seed (UConn) vs an 8 seed (Kentucky), which UM and MSU fans should remember very well. I think I would have that same feeling of it being watered down if an 8 upsets a 1 in college football.

Why?

That?s why they play ?em.

I don’t think basketball and football are comparable. In hoops all it takes is one player getting hot for 40mins for an upset. There is no way - on any regular basis - that you’d have 3 ‘12-seeds’ beat ‘5-seeds’ in football.

Personally Jan. 1 should be when the last game is played.. Now if they had 8 but got rid of the bowl games I'd be on board. The bowl games that don't determine the title winner is all crap. Might as well just add a game to the reg. season schedule. I mean Duke vs Temple, ooh score.

Yep. I'll be happy when they expand to 8, but I think they should expand to 12.

Bowl games haven't meant much of anything since they started inviting teams that have a .500 record.
