OT Anthony Davis announced he is stepping away from the game for at least a year or two. This team is going to be a giant mess.

lol @ their front office firing Harbaugh as if he was the problem.

two VERY young players retiring has nothing to do with the organization...it has to do with these kids figuring out that being alive and healthy when they are 40 is more important than playing football. I hope this trend continues.

He isn't retiring though just taking some time off to apparently heal his body and head. I guess after that he'll go get hit somemore..take another year.

Or he's sitting out a year because he doesn't want to go through a 5 win season?

I'm 42, and broke down without football. I wouldn't have missed much, not that I had the decision to make.

I'm pretty sure the decision to let go of Jimmy H had more to do with his wearing out his welcome and his friction with upper management than it did with W's & L's.

Sometimes both parties benefit and get to move in different directions.....I think that is the case with SF

it makes you wonder if the passion just isn't there to play for this new head coach though. Its a very odd coincidence that so many people retire right when harbaugh leaves and this new guy gets promoted. Obviously, we'll never know if those guys stick around if Harbaugh is still coach...maybe that comes out in the next few years.

I've been wondering the same thing.

At the very least, the coach isn't exactly inspiring them to keep playing.

I certainly don't KNOW what the decision making process for these players was. I would doubt very little of it had to do with the coach....incoming or outgoing.

If you need a new coach to motivate you THAT much......you were 98% gone anyway.....IMO.

I don't know if that's true at all. Players getting around 30 are starting to wonder how many more years they have.

Get a coach that you believe is just going to lose, and you're a couple of years from free agency, and maybe you start thinking twice about how many more you really want to play.

How do they know that about the coach at this point? This guy could have semi-retired (a short year break) because he thinks it's a 5 win team. But it's a 5 win team possible because of all the players they lost, not because of the coach IMO.

The problem I have with this is the others retired. This guy isn't..he just wants to rest. But if the team gets better he'll be back in a heart beat.

Then Jacksonville would have 36 guys retire every year.

I agree with Mitch.....little or nothing to do with the coach. IMO......little or nothing to do with the organization either.

-Patrick Willis
His tender, size-13 feet -- "12? when they're bent" -- can no longer handle the grind of NFL practices let alone the demands of game day.

Willis announced Tuesday he will retire after his 2014 season was cut short by a toe injury that required surgery and sore feet that make everything more of a challenge.

-Justin Smith is 35. A lot of guys retire at 35 or younger.
Unlike Willis and Borland, however, Smith’s decision is not a surprise. And he was decidedly unsentimental about the end of his career.
“You come in, you go out, everything moves on,” the veteran lineman nicknamed “Cowboy” said.

- Chris Borland
"I just honestly want to do what's best for my health," Borland said. "From what I've researched and what I've experienced, I don't think it's worth the risk."

Borland cited a fear of developing a brain disease like former NFL players Mike Webster, Dave Duerson and Ray Easterling, all of whom were diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which is caused by repeated head trauma, after their deaths.

I don't see anything about the circumstances of the above three that would indicate a failure from the coach to "inspire" them to keep playing. I think it is nothing more than coincidence, especially for 49er fans that all three guys decided to do it in the same off season. Nothing more.

I not saying I blame the coach. I'm saying it seems odd that it's one team that has just been through quite a bit of turmoil at the top.

I've seen a lot of players over the years stay in the game longer than they should have because they believed in the coaching staff and it's ability to win the big game.

Not saying these guys don't buy into the coach, or there is something at play other than their health... but I have to file this in the mental database under the category of "Things That Make You Go HMMMM...."

I think the new coach was already on the staff as like a dline coach or something. So all these guys know him and its possible they don't respect him. Its obviously not certain if that's the case....its just really really weird so many people retire the same offseason this goes down.

I doubt it has anything to do with the coaching staff but these guys are just coming to the realization what they are doing to their bodies.

That's the part that stands out to me... they are all from the same team.

If four or five guys around the league retired early due to health, I wouldn't even blink and eye. But when four guys from the same team do it... you have to wonder 'Why is it really only this team who's players are suddenly concerned."

I think each of these guys has had reason to feel concerned for sure. So it could just be coincidence. It very well could be that one guy has called a buddy and listened to his reasons, and decided it seemed like a smart decision.

Plenty of reasons to think nothing is out of the ordinary here. But it's just as reasonable to wonder if it isn't more than just coincidence too.

... of course, it's also not out of the realm of possibility that guys like Borland are thinking "Hey, I can play a year or two, make a million or so, and get out before something serious happens. I still walk away wealthy, and healthy".

And if so, good on ya kid. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see a day when a good NFL career was 4 years, and guy left the game with their head in tact and body able to function.

Everytime I see Jim Brown barely able to walk after a short career, I get a little choked up. Maybe those days are about to be behind us.
