Austin Jackson changing his swing

hellifino said:
seriously, you guys think he's the future in CF? this year will be his last shot at a being a Tiger. imo unless he starts hitting.

So after 2 seasons, one in which he was incredible, and one in which he was bad, you think it's his last chance?

He's a career .271 hitter with a 5.2 career WAR.

LAY OFF THE PAINT CHIPS!

I would Roll with Austin if he can improve on cutting the SO a bit.

There doesnt seem to be any FA for CF i think is that much better than Austin.

theres no way we're getting rid of Ajax unless he has Inge-esque seasons at the plate for the next several years. and im not sure what youre smoking in addition to eating all those paint chips, but ajax is a top-3 defensive CF in baseball if not the best. the only guy i can think of off the top of my head who might be better than ajax is bourjos out in LA.

I agree, there really isn't anybody to replace him with, but for Gods sake, bat him 9th if he is struggling, I don't want to see another year like we had, at the lead-off spot.

ajax is a top-3 defensive CF

at going back on a ball maybe, but he is bad at coming in on one.

here's the blurb on him from the 2011 Fielding Bible winners article:

Center Field

Tigers will live and/or die with Jackson in centerfield and leading off this year.
We have to see how this new batting swing/technique works with live pitching in spring training games and the season.
Defensively he is overall excellent with tremendous range North/East/West ....as we have all watched, yes he can come in on flys or little liners in front of him....the problem, if it is one, as I see it, he doesn't/won't/ or can't dive for balls as he comes in for them. Is this how he learned? or he just isn't comfortable doing it? or whatever the reason, myself and maybe others here can only nitpick at this. and maybe not so much if he was hitting more like 2010 than 2011.
But, I think no matter what, and how further he develops, that he is an over 100 strikeouts a season player.
Now if he regresses any more with the bat in 2012, well then next off season, they would have to 'seriously' look for another leadoff hitter. and I don't see anyone else on the roster capable. That would look like a trade for one...and drop him to 9 in the order.

"Can't come in on the ball, lmao".

we shall see.

all these discussions would be worthless, if Leyland would just hit him in the 9 hole last year.

I don't see them using an approach that could do more damage to his confidence than good. Plus we absolutely need him on the field defensively.

I don't think the Tigers are worried about losing someones confidence, by hitting him 9th and he's not the best CF in baseball, sure he covers a lot of ground and does make some nice plays going back on a ball, but he's below average at coming in on a ball.

from what I've seen of him since he's been here, I'm not impressed at him at all.

He's one of the top 2 or 3 defensive CFers in all of baseball.

You guys do realize Austin Jackson is pretty much a league average CFer overall?

And he's under team control, so there's no need to look for a CF upgrade.

I agree, just an average CF, when you look at everything, now add his 2 bucks and 49 B.A. to it, and he's below average as a player overall.

No, his offense for a CFer is merely below average, while his defense is elite.

When you factor in his offense and defense, his all around play, he his average at worst.

Elite, really? thou he's done some miraculous plays in center field, until he shows some kind of prowness in all directions, then I have to disagree.

And you're wrong.

He is, and there really is no doubt whatsoever about this, one of the two or 3 best defensive CFers in all of baseball.

So yes, compared to his peers he is an elite defensive player.
