Cliff Avril - DL - Lions

Free agent DE Cliff Avril said Wednesday that he "definitely" does not want the Lions to franchise tag him.
"The franchise tag kind of makes it a yearly thing, and you want security," said Avril. The 26-year-old pass rusher did express some hope that the sides can reach a long-term agreement. "(I'm) kind of getting positive vibes as far as for me being there again next year," Avril said. [b:1nemetn4]"Hopefully, we can meet in the middle and make it happen, because I

unless "the middle" is less than 8 mil/yr

middle would be prolly 6 or 7 million a year....fair deal for both at that price.

I'd be stunned......That would be a great deal though.

for me it depends on the length of the deal. if he wants to take a 3 year deal or something hoping to hit free agency in his 28-29 year old prime then I'm fine with like 3 years and 27 mill because I know hes going to play his ass off for 3 straight years.

if he wants to get a long term deal where we might have to worry about complacency then I want a little less annually. something like 5 years and 38-40 mill is ideal imo.

it keeps him here till hes 30 and gives us a strong core of Suh/Fairley and Avril locked in to build around up front. Say what you want but having these three guys all locked up for the next five years would be HUGE as it means we would essentially have one of the best front four irregardless of who else is in the rotation!

Yea I'd say 8mil a year is right around his price, but I could see him wanting 10mil or so because he really is about as good as Charles Johnson, but he was obviously overpaid.

I think if we actually let him hit FA he is probably gone because I think some 3-4 team will offer him the 10+ he wants. Personally I'd offer+ a 5 year 38mil deal with like 20 in guarantees and see if he bites. If not, we can't really overpay so we either risk franchising and trading him or just let him hit FA and see what happens.

Tough decision because Avril is not as good as his numbers considering how often he faces only one guy.

Cliff Avril - DL - Lions

The Detroit Free Press acknowledges that the Lions "won't have much cap room" with free agency approaching on March 13.
The Lions have sunk a ton of money into their defensive line, and their shortage of cap space is one of the many reasons we believe the possibility of LE Cliff Avril hitting the open market is strong. Matthew Stafford, Calvin Johnson, Louis Delmas, and Gosder Cherilus all triggered contract escalators in 2011 that boosted their base salaries. While Avril is the Lions' top offseason priority, he may have to accept a cap-friendly deal to return.

Anyone who writes avril is more of a prioroty than restructuring calvin either doesn't know what hes talking about or just spews out garbage.

re-structuring Calvin should be and I think is the top priority.

Yep. And resigning tulloch should be second. Resigning backus 3rd. Avril would be like halfway down my list....definitely not at the very top.

I hear Detroit is at or near the proposed 2012 cap. Unless WC Ford pays out some large signing bonuses someone will be gone. Levy didnt play well at OLB, could Tulloch be expendable if he is asking too much? and move Levy back to Mike?

I'm not sure how there figuring we are at the cap. Is it based on 2011 figures if you're now a free agent? I hear we have 25 free agents to sign

Lions have roughly 18 million in cap for 2012....without restrucuring Calvin.

You just posted an article saying we're using 122 million, which means we have essentially no cap space...i'm confused.

18 million as of now with only 37 players under contract...what confuses you ?

The article said we're at $122 million right now....Is that simply adding rookies + min contracts to fill out the roster? I don't think that'd cost $18 million

pretty sure it's going off projections of rookies and last salary made.
