Backus re signs

well so much for a discounted deal...

Lions re-signed LT Jeff Backus to a two-year, $10 million contract.
Backus was a necessary re-signing for the Lions, who didn't have any in-house options to replace him. The 35-year-old has made a franchise-record 176 consecutive starts, but will head into next season coming off post season surgery and an increasingly broken-down body.

Mitch[/color]]Damn man. I was hoping for a Stanton type deal.

for a LT they absolutley love and hasn't missed a start since he's been here...lol , they probably think they got off cheap.

cheap my ass, hes 36 years old with shoulder ailments. horrible for a LT. but whatev, lions think they gotta be loyal. wonder how much this hurts a tulloch resigning

Do we know how much of his deal is guaranteed and how much this year?

He'll be 35 by game 2. It won't matter I'll put money on it he doesn't last the season. We might has well have signed Jeff Bridges.

he won't miss any games. He played hurt all of 2011 and I expect he'll do the same if he has to this year. He may not be the best LT in the league, but he's definitely not our weakness on the line.

I won't believe he misses a game until he misses a game. I might not want him back for 2 years but he goes out and plays.

Looks like he either lied to my boy at the wedding or changed his mind...Like him or loathe him he's the best we've got to protect Staff's blindside.

His replacement needs to get on our roster soon though...

Injuries like torn muscles generally come from the wear of age. Not saying it couldn't happen to a younger player but little things become bigger problems after a decade of playing in the NFL. I fully believe MM signed him thinking that he'll play all 16+ games, and that is a mistake. I was hoping we would make our oline younger or at least have a good plan B. With the amount Backus signed for that plan B isn't going to come in free agency so I've got my fingers crossed for the draft.

Well, I'm not sure there was another option. The timing might suggest that he wanted to sign or at least look at the guy who signed with KC. He was set for a visit but once KC signed him Mayhew moved on to Backus?

Winston wasnt going to play LT...he would have knocked Gosder out(which isnt a bad idea)

Yeah I know but I still think there is a small chance we grab a LT through the draft and move Backus to RT or RG.

or a OT like C Glenn, play him at RT and move him to the LT in 2013. He played well at the Sr. Bowl(@ LT). Still hoping Fox can take over at LT/RT

I've given up on Fox. IMO, we need upgrades at 4 positions on the offensive line.
