Boesch’s struggles have been hard to ignore this season. He entered Thursday, hitting .173 with a .465 OPS at home and is on pace to strike out 117 times.

As a result, Leyland said the team’s coaching staff has worked hard to diagnose the problem. On Wednesday, Leyland said hitting coach Lloyd McClendon might’ve found the cause.

“We looked at something that was drastically different from last year and we dissected it,” Leyland said. “It’s significantly not even close to how he was swinging last year. It’s a mechanical thing, so hopefully, that’ll help.”

ok sooo question... why does a guy have to struggle for weeks on end before anyone breaks out the tape? This has always been my big beef with the offense, it takes em way to long to figure out the flaws and or make adjustments, seems like we are really slow to do that all the time. Is it just me? I also noticed Boesch was using a different set of bats today to and finally the ball sounded right again! He went from that two toned black bat to some weird swirl lookin thing and now just a nice single color Louisville.

i dont care if he heats up a little, his defense is awful on top of being awful with the bat. he needs to go.

The article also mentioned something about him being really stressed out and never smiles. He's playing tight

Settle down spoky! LOL

I agree why did they wait so long.... Pretty much a pattern with our staff.. wait till it is almost to late..

Our defense will stink so its not changing so if does start to hit better most of us will care. And he doesn't need to go. Not everyone is going to be AJ in the OF. He probably does need to DH but so do other guys so it is what it is.

You're right, not everybody is going to be AJ.

But not everybody is going to be one of the 5 worst defensive OFers in all of baseball, which Boesch has been.

Did anybody read the 10 worst players in baseball article the other day? Boesch was ranked no better than 4th worst player in MLB by 4 different sites including Baseball Prospectus and Baseball America. He's cost the team several more losses than a replacement level player would have. In fact we have two of the worst 5 players with Boesch and Raburn shuffled between 3 and 4 on all lists. At least one of them is in Toledo now. Ike Davis was number one on all 4 lists and I believe him and Boesch were the only two still on a Major League roster. Why oh Why SMH

Who else you got out there? Raburn is down, you don't want him anyway, DY is still there and AJ and Dirks are on the DL. No choices. You could use Matt Young, and his 100% strikeout ratio ;-)

Actually, just about any AAAA player would do better than Boesch right now.

Don fucking Kelly is a better option than Boesch.

Kelly wish he was batting like Boesch. That's no option.

And AAAA, like "you strike 'em out" Young or "I wish I wasn't the worst C ever" Santos?

Kellys massive defensive advantage over Boesch makes him a better option.

Boesch has a .264 wOBA and is one of the two worst defensive RFers in all of baseball.

That's worse production than you'd expect out of a AAA callup.

Young is the option right now. He's never struck out a ton in the minors but he walks a TON and plays good defense, 3 things Boesch is absolutely terrible at. Even if young only plays to replacement level, he's better than Boesch. send Boesch down when Ajax comes back and young down when Dirks gets back and play Berry in RF until further notice. They are not great options but theyre definitely better than Boesch and Kelly.

An almost 30 year old is an option? There might have been a reason he hasn't had more than a cup of coffee at the show. There is no option, so wow Kelly is a better defender. I'm a better defender but Kelly blows.

Normally he wouldn't be, Boesch is just that bad. I could probably play better than him right now. Boesch has been just as bad as Raburn was before he was sent down, why does Boesch get a free pass? Its not like Young will be replacing him for long either, Dirks would replace him when he comes off the DL.

Maybe his new approach, the kink found in his swing, will help. But Kelly is awful. Young, both of them are awful. Now you don't have an option. When AJ and dirks get back then we do, but now we have none.

But we do have better ones than Boesch.

And no shit Kelly is horrible, I've always stated as such.

I've always said Kelly should be DFA'd, that he has no business on a ML roster, but right now, if it's down to him or Boesch, he's a better option.

Neither have any business on a ML roster though.

So you have a better defense over a bat. And even with his horrible season, BB is better with the bat. Sad to say, but replacing one with the other I'd keep a guy that at least as shown us something at the ML level.

how did you determine that Young is horrible, from his 4 at-bats? please. he deserves more than ONE game to see if he can transfer his OBP skills to the majors this year, and he plays good defense. its not like dirks isnt going to be back in about a week. i think we can survive with matt young for a week in place of boesch.

No, from his 56 PA at the ML level: .192 .250 .212. And the fact he's almost 30.

yes, because 60 PA is a big enough sample size to say he sucks rather than his career .390 OBP in the minors. and who fuckin cares about his age? he would be starting for a WEEK till Dirks gets back ffs. Id MUCH rather have a week of seeing what Young can do rather than a week of Boesch continuing to have awful at-bats and butchering routine plays in the field. young CANT do worse simply because he is a much, much better fielder than Boesch. Young is also a better option than Kelly. He's younger, faster, a better fielder, and had better MiL numbers.
