Beating a legit Big Ten team

Hasn't really happened since 2008 Wisconsin, and that was a fluke. Losing to Minnesota puts Iowa's status in that category a little bit in doubt, but still, the game's at Kinnick.

I'd love to beat Iowa. We haven't really taken a true big ten team down in a while - and Wisconsin was good but it wasn't good because we finished 3-9. Beating Iowa plus an 8+ win season would mean a lot.

The only legit big 10 teams they play this year are MSU and Neb. Sure wins over Iowa and OSU would feel great as a UM fan but in the eyes of other programs, UM would just be taking advantage of teams in down years. Illinois is on the bubble to me..with a weak past and a season teetering with losses to OSU and Purdue, they'd have to convincingly win a bowl game against a good team for me to consider that a legit win. Next year UM will get their chances..that schedule looks brutal.

Actually, I think you mean beating a legit Big Ten title contender. We haven't done that since 2007, when we beat Illinois... who went to the Rose Bowl. Of course, it didn't feel very satisfying, since Illinois seemed liked the overachiever that lucked out in a few of their wins... they probably should've lost to ohio & penn st.

anyway, we have two chances this season against Nebraska and Ohio. We blew our first chance, against MSU.

it is nice being back to those "Carr era expectations" though isn't it? We can bitch about our coaching when we lose close games to the conference elite, instead of bitching about our coaching when we lose just about every game, period.

Ohio might play in the big ten game, so I wouldn't quite put them in the same group as iowa.

I'm pulling for penn state just so ohio doesn't get in.

Each win will put Michigan that much more over 7 wins. 2 of the games are on the road in the B1G, which we know makes it more difficult to win and the other 2 are against OH and Neb. Its hard to tell how good either of those teams are, but they still have big names.

Just curious where do you all rank UM in your legit B1G ranking.

Elite, Cellar, or middle of the pack, given the past few years I wouldn't call us Elite. After 2006 of course.

yeah, that's what I noticed in that other thread where I looked at the sagarin rankings of remaining teams. Our two easier remaining games are unfortunately on the road, and in Illinois' case, they have a bye week to get healthy and prepare for us, so neither is really a "gimme," even though Iowa should be. And Illinois looks like it's going to be a dogfight.

...but of course, you have the usual dumbasses like Art Vandelay that will dismiss those wins out of hand because they weren't "legit" Big Ten opponents.

And heaven forbid we drop 1 of 2, or lose to both ohio and Nebraska. he'll sit back, cross his arms and say: <blockquote>"This is ridiculous. About Iowa, the Minnesota game is obviously a huge huge black eye, but they're 5-0 at home, and their other losses are @PSU by 10 and @Iowa St by 3, who might not be as bad as we thought, having just beaten Texas Tech by 5 td's on the road (ok, ok, that followed 4 straight losses). So they're no gimmie. And anybody that thinks they should be is a complete fucktard.
