before typewriters...

These sorts of things make me feel old. I learned to type in typing class in jr high, most valuable skill I learned.

Was always my backup job

Even in the late 80s I used it in a temp job

lol i used an electric typewriter until middle school. it was such a pain in the ass!

**** all you people with the foresight to learn how to type in school.

I still use 2 fingers on each hand for the whole thing, and while I can type pretty fast, I make lots of typo's.

I never took a typing class. But my job has been with computers for 20 plus years and I still type very slow.

I had to take it for half a year in Jr. High, and Home Economics for the other half.

The teachers let the boys **** off and stuff because we weren't likely to becomes Secretaries or Homemakers.

In hindsight, I wish I would have paid attention in typing at least, because I could never learn proper now, the way I have been doing it is hardwired into by brains and hands.

same for me. But, I learned. We had speed matches in keyboarding, and i was at 70wpm. I'm a very competitive person, so when the teacher (who was the football coach too) set up the speed matches, I paid attention. I'm probably only about 40 wpm now, but still, that's not bad.

really, the main trick is to learn the home keys and then what key is above and below each.

I can type my name fast. With the name Robert its easy with ert right next to each other :)

For whatever reason, a football coach who is also a competitive typing drill instructor is a really, really funny concept to me...

Does he have a cousin who was a Marine Sargent Drill Instructor who is now a psychotherapist...?

And, can a 15 minute call to Geiko really save you money on car insurance?

No, he also taught a business class and Advanced computers.

That sounds like quite a coach...

I had a coach who taught drivers ed. Then had 2 teachers who taught business law and another one taught accounting, who probably knew more about football than the coach. Kinda funny.

But I grew up in the generation where typeing never really had to be taught. Unless you didn't have a computer.

Too be honest, argueing with a girl on aim probably helped the speed of my typeing more than any of the classes we had lol

There's still the opportunity for you to learn.

Ironically, I use the same approach but don't type very fast but make few typos. Unless auto correct gets in the way.

I am terrible at typing... My kids both laugh at my two finger approach but I am pretty fast now...Still make a ton of mistakes I have to go back and correct.

Typing class was the worst grade I ever got from 7th-12th grade and the teacher was awful. We had to take the class along with a Home Ec class and shop, in thirds and in 8th grade..?

The teacher kept slamming me for looking at the keyboard, which I still do. But being an English/Phil major and doing all the writing I've done since college and I've gotten to be pretty good at typing though I still use primarily only use a few fingers and hunt-and-peck.

Pretty soon, typing at all will be obsolete. Voice recognition, etc.
